WandaVision director Matt Shakman looks set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he is confirmed to be in talks to helm the upcoming Fantastic Four film.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Shakman is currently in talks with Marvel Studios to direct the highly anticipated MCU iteration of the comics giant's first family. Initially, Marvel announced that Watts would direct the Fantastic Four reboot in 2020. However, Watts left the project earlier in 2022, claiming he "[needed] a break from the superhero realm" following his successful run of Spider-Man films with Tom Holland. "Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me," Watts said at the time. "I'm eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I'm hopeful we'll work together again, and I can't wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life."

Like Watts, Shakman's last foray into the MCU came with tremendous success. WandaVision earned Shakman a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and the show received 23 nods total, taking home three. With fan hopes of a second season for WandaVision dashed, Shakman's MCU slate is wide-open to taking the reins of the Fantastic Four film.

Beyond Marvel, Shakman has several notable directing credits under his belt. In a directing career spanning twenty years, Shakman's worked on shows such as Succession, Mad Men, Six Feet Under, The Boys, The Great, House M.D., Fargo, Game of Thrones and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He'll also soon direct only his second feature film with 2023's untitled Star Trek movie with J.J. Abrams producing.

Marvel announced the Fantastic Four MCU reboot in December 2020. MCU boss Kevin Feige revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2022 that the new film would open Marvel's Phase Six, which leads up to a pair of Avengers films to close it out -- Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Phase Six appears to conclude The Multiverse Saga, the successor to The Infinity Saga, which encapsulated the MCU's films from 2008's Iron Man to 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Marvel has yet to reveal its cast for the film. Though John Krasinski portrayed Earth-838's Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it isn't clear he'll reprise the role in Fantastic Four.

Fantastic Four is set to arrive in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
