WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #28 by Dan Slott, R.B. Silva, Jesus Aburtov and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

In the latest storyline of Fantastic Four, the cosmic supervillain known as the Griever at the End of All Things returned to get her revenge on Franklin Richards. After refugees from all the universes the Griever had destroyed emerged from the Forever Gate seeking help, the villain arrived on Earth. Now, in Fantastic Four #28, the entire family faces their old enemy, with the fate of all reality hanging in the balance.

During the fight however, the Griever uses her powers to show the individual members of the team how they will eventually die. Every single vision is packed with a big surprise, but nothing is as shocking as Reed Richards' glimpse into his future. Indeed, Mister Fantastic learns that his death is likely to come at the hands of one of his closest friends: The Thing.

Franklin and Griever

As the Griever at the End of All Things attacks, she ensnares Dragon Man, Ben Grimm, Susan Storm and Reed Richards in bubbles of space and time that trap them in a loop. All four are caged in what the Griever describes as the most likely point in time where they will die. Dragon Man faces his father, Ben Grimm is brutally defeated in battle by Rapture, an aging Susan Storm is beaten by Doctor Doom and Reed Richards is trapped in what appears to be a destroyed Baxter Building.

Luckily Johnny Storm isn't trapped by the Griever, so he proceeds to save Dragon Man, and The Thing after that. And while Johnny heads over to save his sister Susan next, Ben goes into Reed's loop to get him out.

The Thing arrives in the wreckage of the Baxter Building to find Reed hiding from a dark vision of his older self. Ben comes face-to-face with an older version of himself, a furious, rampaging Ben who has destroyed the Fantastic Four's home and is out to kill his best friend. At first, Ben thinks that his older self is perhaps controlled by the Puppet Master or could be the Super-Skrull in disguise. But no, this is the real Ben, and he is so angry with Reed that he's ready to kill him.

The present-day Ben initially thinks that this is because his older self still blames Reed for transforming him into a monster, an issue that he has long ago made peace with. But that's not this older version of The Thing's problem with Reed.

"This ain't go nuthin' to do with that. Not a damn thing! But go. You takes him. Just know this," he warns, "One day, you're gonna be me. You'll know what he did. And on that day... You are gonna kill him. An' you won't think twice."

We don't find out what this older Ben is talking about, but it looks like Reed may do something terrible later on in the future. Given everything that Ben holds dear, this could have something to do with his wife, or his two newly adopted children, N'kalla and Jo-Venn. However, those are merely the most likely possibilities for now. The present-day Ben rescues Reed, and the two head back to their own time to face the Griever. They don't have the time to unpack what the two of them just learned, but they may get the chance later on.

As the Griever mentioned, this is a point in space and time where Reed is more likely to die, but that doesn't mind it's totally certain. But even when considering that this may not be how the character dies, it still teases a huge falling out between Reed and Ben, and that's more than foreboding on its own.
