Albus Dumbledore Leads the Group

Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is a professor at Hogwarts who used to be a close friend of Gellert Grindelwald. The two met in Godric’s Hollow shortly after they finished school and quickly formed a close bond. Dumbledore was intrigued by Grindelwald’s ideas for a wizard revolution, but their relationship fell apart following the accidental death of Albus’ sister. During their youth, Dumbledore and Grindelwald formed a blood pact that makes them unable to duel one another. This complicates Dumbledore’s plans to take Grindelwald down, which is why he requires Newt Scamander’s help.

Albus Dumbledore is well-known in the world of magic because of his intelligence and brilliance as a wizard. His former students remain fond of him, particularly Newt, as Dumbledore stood by his side when he was due to be expelled from Hogwarts. This bond is the reason why Newt is so willing to help Dumbledore, even if it means going against the Ministry of Magic.

Newt Scamander Returns to Hogwarts

Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is a Magizoologist who spends his time studying different species of magical creatures. He traveled across the world to write his book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them but got caught up in Grindelwald’s schemes during his time in New York.

Newt is a witty and soft-spoken wizard who chose to follow his passions rather than join his brother at the Ministry of Magic. He often travels with a magical briefcase that expands large enough to house many of the animals that he studies. This is useful on his quests as some of the creatures have abilities that can help him get out of sticky situations.

Dumbledore had recruited Newt to find Credence, but their efforts were thwarted when Grindelwald took Credence to Nurmengard Castle. Newt is one of the only people who know about Dumbledore’s blood pact with Grindelwald. He plans to help destroy the blood pact so that Dumbledore can fight against Grindelwald.

Bunty Leaves the Basement to Join Newt

Bunty walking in the street

Known only as Bunty (Victoria Yeates), this red-haired witch is Newt Scamander’s assistant. She was introduced in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where she worked in Newt’s basement. Her job is to feed and maintain Newt’s magical creatures when he is otherwise occupied. Bunty has a keen interest in Magizoology and has learned a lot about magical creatures through her work with Newt. According to J. K. Rowling, Bunty developed an obsession with Newt and met him at a book signing. The two became fast friends, and she is now one of Newt’s most trusted confidantes.

This is the first time that Bunty will join Newt on his travels in the Fantastic Beasts franchise as she stayed behind when he left for his previous adventure. Her knowledge of magical creatures is sure to come in handy if she joins the fight against Grindelwald and his followers.

Theseus Scamander Follows His Brother's Lead

Theseus (Callum Turner) is Newt Scamander’s older brother. He was an excellent student at Hogwarts and joined the Ministry of Magic after finishing school. Theseus became an Auror in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and fought Grindelwald alongside his brother in France. Unlike his brother, Theseus is an ambitious wizard who always tries to make the responsible choice and follow the law. He has a personal vendetta against Grindelwald because of his fiancée, Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz). Leta sacrificed herself to protect the Scamander brothers and was killed by Grindelwald.

Theseus usually tried to steer Newt into following his path and working for the Ministry, but this began to change after their encounter with Grindelwald. The trailer shows him following Newt’s lead as they navigate a tunnel filled with dangerous creatures along their journey.

Jacob Kowalski Takes His First Trip to Hogwarts

Harry Potter — Jacob Kowalski

Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) is a baker and the only non-magical person joining the fight. This Muggle -- or No-Maj as they call them in America -- met Newt in New York and learned all about magic from him. His memories of magic had been wiped after the Obscurial event in New York per the rules of the Statute of Secrecy, but the spell wasn’t very effective.

Jacob met Newt at a bank, and the two became friends. After joining Newt on his quest, Jacob met Queenie Goldstein, and they formed a romantic relationship. Queenie joined Grindelwald because she agreed with his goal of revealing wizards with the world, but Jacob chose not to join her. He chose to follow Newt instead and help take down Grindelwald.

The trailer revealed that Dumbledore has gifted Jacob with a wand, but there is no indication if he is able to use it since he does not have magical abilities. He also has a meal in the Great Hall at Hogwarts and may be one of the only non-magical people to ever visit the castle.

Yusuf Kama Goes From Villain to Hero

Yusuf with Newt and Jacob

Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam) is a wizard descended from one of the oldest pure-blood families in France. He joined the franchise in The Crimes of Grindelwald with the goal of killing Corvus Lestrange’s child. Yusuf’s mother had been abducted by Corvus and died while giving birth to his child, who Yusuf believed to be Credence. He had made an unbreakable vow with his father to avenge his mother’s death and spent most of the film hunting down Credence.

Yusuf was initially introduced as an antagonist as he held Newt, Jacob and Tina Goldstein captive while he hunted Credence. Newt eventually saved Yusuf from a parasite living in his eye and revealed his plans to them, but Leta revealed that Corvus Junior had already died. Leta’s sacrifice at the rally allowed Yusuf to escape, and he helped the Scamanders fight Grindelwald’s fire monster. He joined Newt and the rest at Hogwarts after the battle and makes an appearance in the trailer with the group as they take a train.

Professor Eulalie "Lally" Hicks (Jessica Williams) is a Charms teacher at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is based in America. She was introduced in The Crimes of Grindelwald as a friend of the alchemist Nicholas Flamel. He spoke to Lally using an enchanted book, which was like the wizard version of a video call that allowed them to communicate while in different countries.

So far, not much is known about Lally and her relationship with Dumbledore. The Secrets of Dumbledore will be the first time that Lally joins the team as a featured character. She briefly makes an appearance in the trailer on a train along with Newt and his team.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be available in theatres on April 15, 2022.
