In honor of the 10th issue of Intruder, a quarterly comics paper available for free around Seattle, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery will host an art exhibit featuring the work of Intruder contributors.
The exhibit will kick off with an opening this Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., where comic books, graphic novels and zines by the individual creators will be available for purchase. In addition, Lori Goldston, the cellist who played with Nirvana in their famous Nirvana: Unplugged performance, and Kyle Hanson will provide “atmospheric music” during the party. The event is free to the public with adult beverages supplied by Seattle’s Hilliard’s Beer.
Intruder is a completely self-produced comics paper featuring some of Seattle’s independent cartoonists. Readers can find free copies in comic book stores, cafes and record shops across the city; it’s also available through mail order. Coming out four times a year, the contributors print, distribute and promote it without any outside advertising or funding. It features the comics of Max Clotfelter, David Lasky, Marc Palm, Darin Shuler, James “Gnartoons” Stanton, Tom Van Deusen and many more.
The exhibit runs through May 7. Nirvana, incidentally, are being inducted into the Rock’N’Roll Hall of Fame today.
“Those of us that were here will never forget the time Fantagraphics staff was invited backstage for their triumphant return in front of fifteen thousand fans at the Seattle Coliseum in September of 1992. Prior to that, most of us had only seen them play in little bars and dance halls around town. The stage alone that night was bigger than many of those early venues,” Fantagraphics’ Larry Reid posted to their blog last week. Beneath the event flier below you’ll find a YouTube clip from Nirvana: Unplugged featuring Goldston on cello.
