With the decade coming to a close, Fandango released a list of its top-selling horror films which, surprisingly, were all released over the course of the last few years."Jordan Peele originals and familiar terrors revitalized horror at the cinema this decade," Fandango tweeted.

2017's IT came in first place, with its 2019 sequel coming in at number two. Two films from Oscar-winning writer/director Jordan Peele -- 2019's Us and 2017's Get Out -- came in third and fourth place, respectively. And finally, 2018's Halloween reboot rounded out the list in fifth place.

Each film shows how horror has evolved, as they all occupy different spaces within the genre. Halloween was a traditional slasher while the IT films played on the supernatural aspect. Peele's films, meanwhile, fell more into the psychological arena with a social awareness angle.

The new decade will continue to see the expansion of the genre as A Quiet Place and Halloween sequels arrive March 20 and Oct. 16, respectively. Reboots of The Grudge, The Invisible Man, Saw and Candyman will also arrive earlier in the year, while Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro returns with Antlers on April 27. 2020 will then close out with Army of the Dead, which arrives on Netflix Dec. 31.
