China’s recent corruption crackdowns have snared X-Men: Days of Future Past actor Fan Bingbing in their orbit. The actor is currently under investigation by the country’s bureau for taxation, though she has yet to be formally charged. The investigation is not a small matter and has prompted greater scrutiny of the country’s entertainment industry, with a far-reaching investigation likely on the horizon.

The investigation was prompted by an argument between Fan and Cui Yongyuan, a Chinese television presenter, last week. According to Deadline, Cui revealed documents that claimed to show that Fan had taken multiple contracts for some projects. This practice, called a yin-yang contract, is a common one in China, allowing the actor in question submit the contract of lowest value to the government, thus avoiding harsher taxation.

Fan is perhaps best known to Western audiences as the mutant Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past. It’s unclear if Fan will reprise her role in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix, though the actor revealed in 2014 that she had signed on to appear in the next four X-Men movies. Since then, the character Blink has played a more prominent role in The Gifted television series, where she is played by Jamie Chung.

Fan was ranked as the fifth highest-paid Chinese actor back in 2016, having earned roughly $17 million. She is next slated to appear in the thriller 355 with Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz.
