The Fallout series is known for its vast Wasteland, home to terrifying monsters that make human survival near impossible. This post-nuclear war world is filled with mutated creatures, heinous humans, and escaped experiments that want nothing more than to tear the player character to pieces. To survive any of the Fallout games, players need their wits (and large guns) with them at all times.

Throughout each game, survivors will encounter an extensive roster of enemies. Some are easy to bring down, while others will force players to resort to mini-nukes to escape with their life. Giant scorpions and super mutant humans aren't the worst of a Wastelander's worries. There are countless enemies ready to make players rage-quit.

Updated July 14, 2022, by Anthony Jeanetta: Anyone who's spent time in the Fallout franchise knows the Wasteland is chock-full of mutated animals and humans ready to eat any wanderer they find. This list is updated to include more monsters fans of Fallout will surely shudder at from their sight alone.

15 Albino Radscorpions Are One Of Fallout 3's Strongest Monsters

An albino radscorpion from Fallout 3 in battle.

Radscorpions are familiar to anyone who's played a Fallout game. These radiation-mutated scorpions are common to the Wasteland across every entry in the series. While players should find they can dispatch most variations of radscorpions relatively quickly, a few are more demanding than average.

The strongest of these variants appears in Fallout 3. Albino radscorpions have the game's third highest hit point total at 1,500. Additionally, they deal significant damage while injecting a potent venom via their stingers. If a player comes across an albino radscorpion in their Wasteland journey, it's best to deal with it from a distance.

14 The Legendary Bloatfly Makes For A Difficult Aerial Enemy

A legendary bloatfly from Fallout: New Vegas.

Like radscorpions, bloatflies are common to the Wasteland across several entries in the series. Normal bloatflies are pretty innocuous compared to most other Fallout monsters. Still, their larger counterpart, the legendary bloatfly, is nothing to be trifled with.

In Fallout: New Vegas, players can find the legendary bloatfly in the Mysterious Cave. Given its legendary moniker, this bloatfly is significantly bigger than normal bloatflies. Plus, with 2,000 hit points and the ability to fire high-damage, explosive projectiles from its tail, the legendary bloatfly is one of the strongest opponents in New Vegas.

13 Fallout 76's Glowing Mirelurk Queen Take A Ton Of Damage

A glowing mirelurk queen from Fallout 76.

Any Fallout veteran knows not to mess with a mirelurk casually. Most players regard these crustacean creatures as ferocious apex predators. Once a mirelurk locks onto a target, they will incessantly pursue their prey. One of the most potent mirelurk variants is the glowing mirelurk queen from Fallout 76.

The radiated glowing mirelurk queen can take an extreme 3,725 hit points through its hard exterior shell. Those wishing to face off against this foe will need to prioritize energy weapons. Although even with those, the queen will take a long time to dispatch.

12 Don't Get Caught By Fallout 4's Venomous Angler

A venomous angler from Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC.

Anglers are mutated angler fish that have grown limbs. One-on-one, a typical angler doesn't present that much of a challenge. Still, those who confront a pack of anglers will likely have their work cut out for them. Players can battle several angler variants in the Fallout 4 DLC, Far Harbor.

The strongest of these variants is the venomous angler. These anglers have 1,750 hit points and are immune to radiation and poison damage. Plus, with the ability to deal significant damage both up-close and at a distance through a special spit attack, venomous anglers are some of the most formidable enemies in Fallout 4.

11 Albino Hermit Crabs Are Extremely Tough Crustaceans

Fighting an albino hermit crab from Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC.

The hermit crabs of Fallout are not cute pets fit for a small terrarium. These mutated crustaceans are giant enemies capable of dealing scores of damage with their huge claws. And, like mirelurks, hermit crabs can take a ton of damage because of their shells.

Players will find hermit crabs in Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC. Those looking for the most substantial hermit crab variant will want to search for the albino hermit crab. This variant has 3,800 hit points, making it one of the strongest creatures in the entire game. Due to the hermit crab's lack of speed, the best tactic for engaging one is to plan ahead and keep it as far away as possible.

10 Don't Let The Beauty Of The Nukalurk Queen Deceive

nukelurk from fallout

Fallout players can only find the nurkalurk queen in the Nuka World DLC for Fallout 4. She's easily identifiable thanks to her unique glowing body, gained by absorbing too much Nuka Cola Quantum. This queen is the apex of the mirelurks and comfortably sits atop their food chain.

Thanks to her shell, the nukalurk queen has 1,500 hit points and is immune to radiation and poison damage. Like the glowing mirelurk queen, energy weapons are a sruvivor's best bet. Even with energy weapons, players are in for a sustained fight because of the queen's significant damage-reducing effects. While it's better to fight the nukalurk queen at a distance, even this tactic is difficult as her acid spray attack can hit from a range.

9 The Glowing Mothman Is One Of Fallout 76's Most Potent Opponents

The mothman is one of Fallout's strangest, most terrifying creatures. Fallout 76 explorers can find this half-man, half-moth hybrid in Appalachia, but beware; it's capable of dealing significant damage through its aerial attacks. Encounters with a mothman are rare, but players should treat any experience with one carefully.

Players looking for the greatest mothman variant will want to seek the glowing mothman. This variant is highly irradiated, giving the monster its luminous green features. The glowing mothman has 1,700 hit points, which makes it challenging to bring down. Nonetheless, players can dodge its bevy of long-range attacks by strafing.

8 Frank Horrigan Is Fallout 2's Ultimate Boss

armored super mutant frank from Fallout 2

Frank Horrigan is a human vault dweller turned cyborg and super mutant. A former bodyguard to the President, the Enclave experimented on Horrigan and turned him into a super mutant enhanced with several cybernetic upgrades. Frank is the final boss of Fallout 2, and series veterans widely regard him as one of the most exacting bosses to date.

In addition to a plethora of powerful attacks, Frank Horrigan carries 999 hit points. This high health total, combined with his special cybernetic armor, makes Horrigan a beast to take down. Even critical hits cannot bypass this extra strong armor, which is also highly resistant to small arms, explosives, and energy weapons. Upon reaching the end of Fallout 2, players must fully prepare their character with the weapons and gadgets necessary for a drawn-out battle.

7 Legate Lanius Is The Frank Horrigan of Fallout: New Vegas

Legate Lanius in full armor from Fallout: New Vegas.

Like Frank Horrigan, Legate Lanius is the last challenge for Fallout: New Vegas players. The primary commander of Caesar's Legion, Lanius, is known as the Monster of the East for his legendary brutality. At 7'1", he's a giant with the unnatural agility of someone much smaller.

With an 80 percent speed boost, Legate Lanius is fast enough to outrun a player character even with both legs hobbled. Plus, he carries significantly more fatigue points, which makes him extremely difficult to knock down. This super speed and stamina, combined with his high 920 hit points, make him an incredibly worthy foe.

6 Enraged Fog Crawlers Haunt Players In Fallout 4's DLC

an enraged fogcrawler from Fallout 4

Like hermit crabs or mirelurks, fog crawlers are a type of mutated crustacean found in the Far Harbor DLC. They get their name from their primary habitat: the foggy coastal regions and islands they use to ambush prey. Players can tell when a fog crawler is near through their distinctive booming vocalizations.

The most potent basic fog crawler variation is the enraged fog crawler. Enraged fog crawlers have 2,200 hit points and an exceptionally high damage resistance of 4,000. Additionally, enraged fog crawlers are immune to both radiation and poison damage. Those confronting an enraged fog crawler want to focus on using energy and armor-piercing ballistic weapons.

5 Shipbreaker Makes Other Fog Crawlers Look (Almost) Easy

Shipbreaker the fog crawler from Fallout 4

Shipbreaker is a legendary fog crawler located on The Island in Fallout 4. After years spent in the fog, she has mutated to emit unique radio signatures that interfere with radio equipment. Another difference between Shipbreaker and other fog crawlers is her intensity. Unlike other fog crawlers, Shipbreaker is unusually vicious and kills for sport, not just out of necessity.

Like the enraged fog crawler, Shipbreaker has a damage resistance of 4,000. This defensive ability, with her uncommon intensity, makes Shipbreaker one of the last characters players should take on in the Far Harbor DLC.

4 The Mythic Deathclaw Has Tormented Countless Players

A mythic deathclaw from Fallout 4

Since the original Fallout, deathclaws have troubled anyone exploring the Wasteland. A pre-war U.S. government engineered deathclaws using a mix of animal DNA, including a Jackson's chameleon. Deathclaws are tall, strong, and extremely ferocious. Their large, razor-sharp claws inflict significant damage with only one swipe.

The mightiest deathclaw variant is the mythic deathclaw from Fallout 4, which has 1,360 hit points. Plus, the deathclaw's dark scales act as an armor and make it highly resistant to physical and energy damage. Those wanting to battle a deathclaw of any kind, but especially a mythic deathclaw, should focus their attacks on its softer, unarmored belly. Still, this is easier said than done as deathclaws move in specific ways to protect this one weak point.

3 Ancient Behemoths Terrorize The Commonwealth

A super mutant behemoth from Fallout 4

Super mutants are one of the most common Fallout opponents. Fallout 3 introduced a new variant of super mutant, the super mutant behemoth. These behemoths have large amounts of health, which make them time-consuming, at the least, to fight.

Fallout 4 presented a new, stronger variant of behemoth, the ancient behemoth. These giant savages are the toughest and oldest mutants players come across in the game. Ancient behemoths have 1,900 hit points, are immune to radiation damage, and are especially resistant to physical and energy damage. Combined with their powerful attacks, this defensive capability makes ancient behemoths some of the most formidable opponents in the series.

2 The Scorchbeast Queen is Fallout 76 Royalty

A scorchbeast queen from Fallout 76 being shot at while flying.

Enclave scientists created the first scorchbeasts by experimenting on irradiated bats with biochemicals. These massive winged beasts carry a highly infectious plague that turns anyone infected with it into Scorched (ghoul-like humans). They command these Scorched servants through ultrasonic echolocation, which they can also use to emit a powerful sonic blast.

The scorchbeast queen is, appropriately, the final boss in Fallout 76. With a health tally of 32,767, the scorchbeast queen will likely take most of the 30-minute time limit to dispatch. Her attacks include long-range sonic blasts and sweeping wing attacks, both of which deal significant damage. In addition to these assaults, the scorchbeast queen is shrouded in a potent radiation-damage cloak that prevents players from getting too close.

1 Gojira Was So Powerful Fallout Creators Removed Him

A fire gecko battling Gojira in Fallout: New Vegas.

Geckos are small, mutated reptilians found in Fallout: New Vegas. These bipedal lizards generally roam the Mojave Wasteland in packs, attacking anyone who dares to disturb them. There are several gecko variants, but the most robust variant never actually made it to the game.

Gojira, a behemoth-sized fire gecko variant, was deemed so strong that developers removed him from the game and hid him in the game files. Players can only access Gojira by console command. A quick look at Gojira's statistics makes it evident why Fallout's developers eventually decided against including him in the game. Gojira has an almost incomprehensible 8,000 health and a special fire breath attack that deals 400 base damage.
