One of the hallmark features of a great Bethesda video game is the communities ability to modify the game to their liking. Yet in the world of online games as a service model modifying the game to any extent is usually prohibited. Bethesda bucked against tradition in Fallout 76allowing players to create mods and incorporate them into the game.

Creators took no time in creating a vast array of different mods, from inventory management to graphical upgrades. The biggest library of mods can be found on Nexusmods.com, though the vast collection of mods can make deciding what to download overwhelming for even the most competent Fallout player.

Better Inventory

With Better Inventory, managing the ever-growing stockpile of items has never been easier. The main feature of this mod is its ability to sort items into one of 4 categories: weapons, food/drink, apparel and notes. The combined weight of items in each group is included as well, so when over-encumbered players can know where the extra weight is coming from. Also added was a keyring, to store keys as well as passwords. Lastly, a few keyboard key functions that make navigating the inventory easier rounds out this great mod.

Perk Loadout Manager

In Fallout 76, equipping Perk cards gives players a number of skills and special abilities. These cards can be carried with the player and swapped out at will. Managing a card loadout can be tricky, especially when trying to do it under pressure. Moving one card at a time while making sure the proper cards are equipped is time-consuming and arduous. Perk Loadout Manager allows for the creation of 12 separate pre-made Perk card loadouts, that can be swapped out on the fly. This means that no matter the situation, a player can quickly switch to a set of cards that will help them overcome the challenges the wasteland has to offer.

Glowing Items, Recipes and Plans

These are in fact two separate mods that should be installed together. Glowing Items is the name of the mod that will cause all loose spawn items to glow a bright radioactive green. Recipes and Plans Glow is the name of the second mod, making recipes and plans glow the same bright green. Without these mods, finding these items in-game can be difficult, as they often blend in to the scenery around them.

Text Chat

When Fallout 76 was released, it was absent of a text chat feature players of MMOs had come to expect. While Bethesda said there was one planned for the roadmap, a mod creator decided not to wait. Developing the simply named Text Chat, this mod adds a fully functioning chat system to the game. Channels for the mod include: global chat, trade chat, group chat, clan chat, local chat, party chat and an EU global chat. There isn't any mention of adding any additional global chat channels, but that could change in the future. This mod is absolutely critical for any player used to chat systems from other MMORPG games.

Fallout 76 Quick Configuration-Ini-Editor and Mod Manager

This pair of mods may be the most important of all, as they add a number of important features. Once installed, players will be able to install and manage any other mods they wish to use, as well as checking mods for updates. As the number of mods used can stack up quickly, making them hard to maintain, this makes modding and managing extremely easy. It also allows for the individual change of volume, audio interface and voice chat settings.

Included are a number of graphical settings such as changing resolution, changing display mode, disabling VSync, changing FOV, changing camera distance and position. Giving options for players with high-end PCs the chance to get the best visuals possible, while allowing low-end PCs to get smoother gameplay by turning down settings. It finishes with two neat additions, changing the color and resolution of your Pip-Boy. The other is being able to view screenshots and photos from the mods gallery.

Modifying Bethesda games can be a hugely rewarding experience, adding life and fun to games that have long since been beaten. Taking that concept of mods into the online realm is exciting, because it's another way of keeping this amazing title relevant for years to come. Grabbing these essential mods not only adds incredible functionality but adds to the gameplay experience as well.
