Regardless of how cold some areas are lately, we’ve got a couple of weeks to go before hitting the Winter anime season. And with that season comes plenty of new series that are highly anticipated. But that doesn’t mean every one of the fall anime series is going anywhere. On the contrary, some of the biggest and best anime of this season will still be around next season.

But at the same time, there are a few newer series which might pass some people by if they’re not careful. This list will look at both anime continuing from the fall season as well as some of the newer series which will be worth at least a first episode preview.

10 RETURNING: SEVEN DEADLY SINS: WRATH OF THE GODS

The Seven Deadly Sins anime has quickly grown to be one of the more popular second-tier shonen anime franchises. It started in 2014 and has been running off and on since then.

Currently, Meliodas and his crew are enjoying what is supposedly the final season of the series, though considering the manga is still running and the series is still popular, this is still up in the air.

Their have been some fan complaints, thanks to the series switching over from A-1 Pictures to Studio DEEN, resulting in an animation change, but loyal fans will still try to finish the series out.

9 NEW SERIES: DARWIN'S GAME

Based on the manga by FLIPFLOPs, Darwin’s Game is about a young boy named Kaname Sudou, who’s asked to try out a strange new app known as Darwin’s Game. Unfortunately for him, he learns once you join the game, there’s no actual way to quit.

A series that’s as much about the psychology behind the battles as it is the battles themselves, Darwin’s Game should be one of the hotter series of the year.

8 RETURNING: AHIRU NO SORA

Sora Kurumantani is rather short for his age. It wouldn’t be a problem, except his favorite sport is basketball, leaving him at a huge disadvantage he’s had to try and overcome through unwavering dedication and hard work.

He joins the basketball team at Kuzuryuu High School in the hopes of going to multiple tournaments, but quickly learns none of the people on the team even care about basketball. Thus, he has to inspire them through his own love for the sport. This series began in the Fall, but it’s scheduled to run 52 episodes so it’ll be continuing through into next year.

7 NEW SERIES: PET

Pet was a seinen series by creator Ranjou Miyake that ran in the early 2000s for just under sixty chapters. It followed people with the special ability to control people’s memories. This power is often used to rid the world of mysteries that would be...annoying...to the people in charge.

The characters with these powers are called “Pets”, and they’re used by those in power to manipulate the world and people’s memories as they see fit.

Geno Studio will be animating this series, and considering the work they did on Golden Kamuy, people should have nothing to worry about.

6 RETURNING SERIES: WELCOME TO DEMON SCHOOL! IRUMA-KUN

iruma suzuki

Iruma Suzuki is a fourteen-year-old boy who lives under a family who cares about him so little, they literally sold him to a demon. Fortunately for Iruma, the demon is a kindly old man who literally wants nothing other than to have a grandson he can show off to his fellow older demons.

But now, Iruma has to go to a school where if anyone finds out he’s a human, he’ll be killed. Fortunately, he’s a sweet enough guy that he can win over even the meanest demon.

5 NEW SERIES: I HATE GETTING HURT, SO I PUT ALL MY SKILL POINTS IN DEFENSE

Kaede Honjou is invited to join the VR MMO known as New World Online by her best friend. But because she knows nothing about the game, she winds up giving all her skill points to her defense stat, unlocking a special ability known as “Absolute Defense”, along with a counter ability which can beat any enemy in just one hit.

Though she’s slow and inexperienced, her build seems to give her the ability to wander the world with no problem. This series is a action-comedy built for people who’ve gotten tired of the typical isekai storylines.

4 RETURNING SERIES: MY HERO ACADEMIA

Quickly rising through the ranks to become one of the most popular animated series of all time, BONES continues it’s adaptation of Horikoushi Kohei’s My Hero Academia. This season, Deku and his friends get to try training under actual heroes in a work-study program.

But while they’re training, the villains are uniting to try and gain a frightening new power that could turn the entire world on its head. We’re getting to see new and old characters enjoy more of the spotlight, while Deku’s growth continues, and the best parts of this are yet to come.

3 NEW SERIES: RIKEIKOI

Shinya Yukimura and Ayame Himuro are both dedicated scientists...that happen to fall in love with one another. But even this they try to prove via scientific theory. Using every chance they get, they try to test the love they have for one another, giving love the basis in facts they both need.

This series is a comedy manga that’s being animated by Zero-G, who’ve already animated Grand Blue, meaning they have a good grasp of what it takes to invent a comedic series.

2 RETURNING SERIES: SWORD ART ONLINE: ALICIZATION - WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD

Sword Art Online: Alicization has given the Sword Art Online franchise new life. Following the second season, the series wasn’t taken very seriously, thanks to a collection of goofy villains and weak drama. But things have undergone a massive change with Alicization, where Kirito is stuck in the VR “Underworld” for a different reason.

Last season saw Kirito aiming to defeat the Administrator of this world, but this season sees the world under attack by the monsters of the Dark Territory, with Kirito out of action and no other hope than his partner in the world, Alice. The tension feels ramped up for all the characters involved, and it’s become one of the better fantasy series of the year.

1 NEW SERIES: SMILE ON THE RUNWAY

Fujito Chiyuki has everything she needs to be a fashion model. She’s beautiful, her father runs a small modeling agency...but there’s just one problem: she’s too short! Her father wants her to give up on her dream, but that’s when she runs into Tsumura Ikuto.

Ikuto is a quiet sort but is incredibly talented at making fashionable clothing. Together, the two combine to achieve dreams they both believed too hard to achieve alone. One of the more popular series running in Shonen Magazine, it’s great to get to see this kind of variety pop up out of the shonen scene. Hopefully, it serves up enough looks to go viral.
