At the end of "The Star-Spangled Man," Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes visit Helmut Zemo in prison. The heroes are tracking down the terrorist group the Flag Smashers, and they hope they will discover new information about it by speaking with Zemo. Presumably, Zemo's been locked up since the end of Captain America: Civil War for his crimes, which he tried to frame Bucky and the Avengers for as a way to get revenge for the death of his family during their brawl with Ultron in Sokovia. As Bucky and Sam make the decision to venture to Berlin where Zemo is held, the screen cuts to an image of the villain in his cell, which gives the audience a glimpse of his cell number: 2187.

The number 2187 has a long history in the Star Wars franchise. First appearing in 1977's Star Wars: A New Hope, 2187 was the number of the cell Princess Leia was kept in on the Death Star. It wasn't chosen at random, either, as George Lucas reportedly placed the number in the movie as a reference to Arthur Lipsett's short film, 21-87. That 1963 film had a profound impact on Lucas, influencing the young director in his creation of Star Wars.

The number appeared yet again in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Finn's Stormtrooper number was FN-2187, a direct callback to Princess Leia's cell number.

While it may be a coincidence that it has now appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Zemo's cell number, the history of 2187 in the Star Wars franchise is too significant to be ignored. Given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars are both under the Disney umbrella, it's very likely this Easter egg was placed in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on purpose.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
