Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier costar Indya Bussey doesn't see her character, DeeDee, or the show's other Flag Smashers as either clear-cut villains or heroes.

"I see us as people. I see us as humans," Bussey told The Direct. "I see us as really superpowered people who just want better, and who don’t want to go back to the bad things, [when] everything was low. In the story, we got kicked out, we’re the refugees, and we want better for [people]. We don’t want them to go hungry. We don’t want them to die because they can’t get medicine. We’re the Robin Hoods! [...] Because a lot of those refugees can’t do what we can do, they can’t go get the stuff just like we can go get the stuff, and so I, personally, love the Flag Smashers. If I wasn’t in [the show] I’d definitely still be Team Flag Smasher!”

Created by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary in the 1980s, the original Flag-Smasher, Karl Morgenthau, was designed to serve as the antithesis to Captain America and his belief in the inherent goodness of patriotism. Karl(i) was then gender-swapped for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where she is played by Erin Kellyman. What's more, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Karli, DeeDee and the other Flag Smashers are powered by a recreated version of the Super Soldier Serum and want to restore the world to the way it was right before the Blip, keeping national borders open.

While some feel The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has crossed the line into portraying the Flag Smashers as outright villains -- particularly in Episode 3, when Karli set off a car bomb that got nearby civilians killed -- Kellyman, like Bussey, sees the characters as morally ambiguous, not wrong. "I think it's so important for women and young girls to see women in these bigger and more complicated roles," she explained. "[Karli is] relevant and she's important, and what she's fighting for is good. The way she's going about it might be a bit questionable, but her route is from a good place and she's pure. It was a lot of fun to play."

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. A new episode debuts each Friday on Disney+.
