The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will take some liberties with U.S. Agent to make him more reflective of the real world.

U.S. Agent actor Wyatt Russell and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman spoke to EW about bringing the stand-in Captain America from the page to the MCU. For Russell, part of the character's appeal is how he forms an interesting triangle with Sam and Bucky.

"He's a complicated character. That's what drew me to him," Russell said. "It'll be fun seeing how all three of these guys interact in terms of what their identity is. I think that I can safely say that it's a show about identity and what it means to each specific person."

Though the replacement Cap is based on U.S. Agent from the comics, Spellman said he and the writers updated and fleshed out the character to better fit the MCU and modern times, and Russell was a big part of that. Still, Spellman assures fans that the source material still guides their interpretation.

"That character from the books, what he represents is extremely relevant," Spellman said. "We shifted away from the books a little bit, so we added some very, very different dimensions, especially once Wyatt got involved and started really inhabiting the character. But the spirit, all you've got to do is read Marvel comics and then imagine that we didn't do half of what's in the books. That's my way of saying I can't talk about Wyatt."

Little is known about U.S. Agent's role on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He's only been glimpsed in the trailers and his motivations are unclear. Some speculate he could be tied to the Abomination from The Incredible Hulk -- who's set to return on She-Hulk next year. Regardless, like Baron Zemo, he's sure to view himself as the hero of the story, which could prove dangerous for the titular duo and their quest to carry on Steve Rogers' legacy.
