The Falcon and the Winter Soldier features Wyatt Russell's character John Walker taking up Steve Rogers' shield as the new Captain America. It turns out the role makes a full circle for Russell, as his first-ever audition was for the role of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's actual Steve Rogers.

Russell shared the story during an interview with Good Morning America, saying he originally auditioned for Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger. "I think it's a fun story, and I think that honestly the first audition was really something to read to see if I was any good at acting or not," he said with a laugh. "I don't ever think I was ever actually in competition for the role." Chris Evans would land the role of Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger, and continued to portray him through Avengers: Endgame.

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Walker is selected by the government to be the new Captain America after Sam Wilson hands over Steve Rogers' shield to the Smithsonian. Russell previously discussed the differences between Walker and Rogers, namely the fact that Walker does not have the Super Soldier Serum coursing through his veins. "[U.S. Agent is] strong, but he's not a super soldier. I wanted him to look normal, in shape," Russell told USA Today.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
