The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will tackle the "complicated" legacy of Captain America during its six-hour run. According to series composer Henry Jackman, some heavy political themes will also be in play.
"Because of the slightly different format of having six-hourly episodes, that's more real estate...so there's a bit more opportunity to go down the road into psychological-drama and explore backstories because you've got more space to do that in," Jackman told FilmSpeak during an interview.
"There's weighty issues. It's still entertaining. It's not a deathly serious seminar about the political history of the United States of America, but it definitely touches on less comfortable, important things that give rise to some really quite impressive performances," Jackman continued, adding that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place on "a more grounded level" than previous Marvel Studios projects.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may have already hinted at the direction it intends to take, based on a rumored casting choice. Elijah Richardson is rumored to have been cast as Eli Bradley, aka Patriot. Eli's grandfather, Josiah, was subjected to the Super Soldier Serum before Steve Rogers, becoming the first Captain America. Carl Lumbly has also been rumored to play Josiah in the series.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series debuts on Disney+ on March 19, 2021.
