Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally has a full trailer. The series is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, when Steve Rogers decided to return to the past and handed off his shield to Sam Wilson. Despite being Steve's chosen successor, it looks like things aren't going quite as planned for Sam and Bucky Barnes. From internal battles to enemies old and new, here's what the trailer reveals about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sam Wilson Struggles to Fill Captain America's Shoes

Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Steve may have picked Sam, but the Falcon is having a hard time with his new role. This is evident by the opening shot, which shows Sam looking at some sort of Captain America exhibition, reminiscent of the one shown at the Smithsonian in Captain America: The Winter Solider. In the next shot, he tells Bucky that, "the legacy of that shield is complicated." Clearly, he's under a lot of pressure to be worthy of the shield and will likely grapple with what it truly means to be Captain America.

Speaking of the shield, Sam isn't shown holding it even once in this trailer. Although he was seen practicing with it in the last teaser, it seems he isn't quite ready to use the shield in combat yet. In the comics, Sam fought with both his wings and the shield as Cap, so perhaps the series will build up to this event later on when he finally embraces the mantle.

Bucky Barnes Supports Sam Wilson

While some fans were upset that Steve didn't choose Bucky as his replacement, Bucky supports Steve's decision. In the trailer, he appears to be bringing Sam a case, presumably carrying something important, such as a new Captain America suit or some other special equipment. He then tells Sam, "the world is upside down. People need something to get behind. They need the symbol." Even if Sam has his doubts, Bucky seems to be trying to convince him to embrace the mantle.

When the show's tagline was revealed to be "who will wield the shield," some fans speculated that Bucky might try to take over as Cap. Going by his words in the trailer, this is not the case. Rather than competing for the mantle, maybe Sam and Bucky will both try to persuade the other to wield the shield, especially since both seem to be sticking to their current monikers in the trailer.

First Look At the Flag Smashers

Erin Kellyman as Flash Smasher in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The trailer offers the first look at Sam and Bucky's new adversaries, the Flag Smashers, which include Erin Kellyman's character. The masked group can be seen running around and causing chaos in various locales, with Kellyman facing off against Sam twice. Although the group's name isn't mentioned in the trailer, recent promotional materials revealed the name "Flag Smashers," along with an image of Kellyman's masked character.

The alias Flag-Smasher has only been used by two characters in the comics, Karl Morgenthau and Guy Thierrault, and it is unknown whether Kellyman's character is related to either of them. The Marvel Cinematic has made significant alterations to character origins in the past, so this wouldn't be unprecedented.

Baron Zemo Returns

Zemo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

As many already know, Helmut Zemo is returning in the series. He still hasn't donned his purple mask, but it looks like the villain has come home. He is shown standing in front of a monument which, based on the coat of arms and flags at its base, is in Sokovia. Zemo used Bucky's past to break up the Avengers after his family was killed during the final battle in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now that Bucky has been de-programmed and the Avengers reassembled, it will be interesting to see what Zemo plans to do now.

New Missions and a Mysterious Figure

Three Figures in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will see Sam and Bucky going on new missions around the world, and they won't be alone. Throughout the trailer, the duo get chased through a city at night by unseen pursuers, but in one shot, there appears to be a third person with them. This mysterious figure only appears in silhouette, but it looks like they're wearing some kind of armor. Maybe they've teamed up with John Walker/U.S. Agent or picked up another ally in their fight against the Flag Smashers.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series debuts on Disney+ on March 19, 2021.
