As the release of the Disney+ show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier edges closer to its release, more details are beginning to emerge about the series' plot. Now, a piece of official merchandise has raised a question about who Captain America's successor will be, hinting at a potential conflict between his close comrades.

A Twitter post recently shared some merchandise for the show that asks the question, "Who Will Wield The Shield?" It is likely that this question will be the central conflict for the show's plot, as the iconic mantle of Captain America needs a new hero to bear it. The item features the two most likely candidates, the titular protagonists of the series.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe lost some significant players in its hero roster by the end of Avengers: Endgame. In addition to the loss of Iron Man, Steve Rogers stepped down from the mantle of Captain America, choosing instead to live out his life in his original era. Having lived a happy life with Peggy Carter, a much older Steve returns to his friends to explain his choice. Specifically, he asks that Sam Wilson, The Falcon, inherits the shield.

However, the latest tagline suggests Cap's will might not be the only factor in deciding his ultimate successor. While Sam Wilson was chosen, Bucky Barnes might also be a strong contender. This does not necessarily correlate to a direct conflict between the two, as any number of reasons could force Bucky to step up if The Falcon cannot. However, his subsequent actions under his brainwashing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier might have permanently compromised his ability to fit the role.

Also, these two are not the only contenders for the mantle. It has already been shown that the US government of the MCU does not agree with Cap's choice, and has put forward its own contender in the form of John Walker, who will operate under the code-name US Agent. It seems that when the show begins, the fate of the shield will still be very much undecided.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series debuts on Disney+ in 2021.
