At the end of Avengers: Endgame, an elderly Steve Rogers bequeathed his shield to Sam Wilson/Falcon. The symbolic gesture implied that he was passing on the mantle of Captain America to his friend and partner, with Bucky Barnes' support. Now, the adventures of Sam and Bucky will continue in the Disney+ television series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The series is set to feature the return of Baron Zemo and Sharon Carter, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of U.S.Agent.

With shooting happening now, there have been plenty of set photos released online, on top of an official teaser trailer that gave us a taste of what the series will have in store. But while much of the premise is still being kept under wraps, there are some hints of what will happen on the show. Given all that we know about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, could the series give the MCU its own "Battle for the Cowl?"

Batman: Battle for the Cowl was a 2009 comic miniseries published by DC. At the time, Batman was dead following Final Crisis, leaving a noticeable vacuum in Gotham City. Therefore, both superheroes and supervillains took part in a literal battle to determine who the next Batman would be. Although this storyline unfolded in the DC Universe, it could somewhat serve as a basis for what will transpire in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Here is everything we know about the series: first, we know that it will revolve around Sam Wilson, who will try to live up to the legacy of Steve Rogers, and he'll be partnered with Bucky. They'll have to deal with the resurgent threat of Baron Zemo, but that isn't all; in fact, thanks to set pictures and the series' promo video, we also know John Walker, aka U.S. Agent, will factor into the series. Propaganda images spotted on the set seem to reinforce the idea Walker is the government's choice to replace Captain America.

Steve Rogers may have given his shield to Sam Wilson, but since it's technically government property (as revealed in Captain America: Civil War), the government might throw its hat in the ring and decide to go over Rogers' head and choose its own Sentinel of Liberty.

What's more, it was recently reported that actor Carl Lumbly was added to the series' cast, with rumors circulating that the actor will play Isaiah Bradley. In the comics, Bradley became a super-soldier and briefly followed in the footsteps of Captain America. If that is the case, then the television series will feature four characters who, at one time or another, were Captain America in the comics.

If you throw in Zemo, who clearly has an axe to grind with the legacy of Captain America, then we might be looking at a confrontation to determine who will ultimately be the one and only Captain America -- or, in Zemo's case, who will be the one to destroy his legacy forever.

In Battle for the Cowl, fans knew Dick Grayson was the one who should follow in Batman's footsteps, and he was the one who eventually won the cowl. In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier we also know that Sam is the one who deserves the shield -- hopefully, he will also be the one who ends up with it when all is said and done.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series arrives on Disney+ in August.
