Eli is the grandson of Josiah Bradley, who was given the Super Soldier Serum and served as Captain America prior to Steve Rogers. Eli was recruited by Iron Lad to form the Young Avengers and stop Kang the Conqueror. To mimic his grandfather's abilities, Eli donned the Patriot costume and started taking Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH). During a battle, Eli was wounded and received a transfusion of blood from Josiah, gaining actual superhuman abilities.

Carl Lumbly, who was previously cast in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is himself rumored to be playing Josiah. Notably, other key members of the Young Avengers will appear in upcoming Marvel Studios projects. Hailee Steinfeld will play Kate Bishop/Hawkeye in Hawkeye. Meanwhile, Kathryn Newton will take over the role of Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The character was previously played by Abby Ryder Fortson in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, and by Emma Fuhrmann in Avengers: Endgame. In the comics, Cassie becomes the Young Avengers hero Stature.
