Avengers: Endgame shocked viewers when Steve Rogers/Captain America opted to stay behind in the past with Peggy Carter after returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful places in the timeline. This raised a lot of questions, though, as to just how much anyone really knew about Steve's plans. Luckily, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier revealed that Steve's best friend, Bucky Barnes, did indeed know what Captain America was planning.
Introduced alongside Steve in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky was the future Sentinel of Liberty's best friend. However, Bucky ended up on a distinctly different path from Steve, becoming an unwilling Hydra agent after nearly dying in World War II. Thanks to his friendship with Steve, though, Bucky was able to start the process of recovery from what he'd suffered. For his part, Bucky was also a big part of helping Steve to come to his decision to leave.

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, it's not totally clear just what shape the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take. While there's a good indication the characters that Disney acquired from 21st Century Fox will soon arrive, there's not much solid information on just when or how that might happen. Right now, there are a lot of potential directions the MCU could go in the future, though exactly which one it will take remains to be seen.
