Fairy Tail: 10 Things Only True Fans Know About Natsu

With Natsu the loud-mouthed, hot-blooded main character of Fairy Tail, it’s easy to believe a casual viewer might know everything there is to know about him. After all, he’s in nearly every episode and featured prominently in all the arcs since the very beginning. But how much do you really know?

Fairy Tail has been going for almost a full decade now, and that’s a long time to remember everything about a single character, especially when there’s so many other series every year. That’s what this list is for—to test your knowledge or help you learn something new about the hottest character on Fairy Tail.

Forewarning: spoilers for some of the most recent series abound!

10 HIS NAME MEANS SUMMER

Coming up with names can be one of the hardest things about creating a character. This is why creators will often think up themed names, like how everyone in Dragon Ball Z is named after food. In Hiro Mashima’s case, he tends to go with season based names for his main characters.

The lead of Rave Master was named Haru, after the Spring. The lead of his current manga Edens Zero is Shiki, which means “Four Seasons”. And Natsu, the hot-blooded flame mage that he is, is named after the Summer. It’s a bit on the nose, but when were shonen series ever subtle?

9 HE CAN'T CONTROL HIS POWER-UPS

Transformations are a time-honored part of shonen action series. They’ve been around since Goku first became a Super Saiyan on Namek to beat Frieza, as every series tries to emulate them and show how the hero has gone to the “next” stage.

Natsu has two different power-ups of his own; the Fire Lightning Dragon mode, which allows him to generate flames and lightning to deal extra damage, and Dragon Force, a power which is meant to make him more like a Dragon. Though he’s accessed both of these powers multiple times, its never been something he could turn on and off like other shonen protagonists - they always happen during extreme duress.

8 HIS SCARF IS SPECIAL

Natsu’s most iconic piece of clothing is probably his scarf, which he wears regardless of the weather or situation. He’s never caught without it, which becomes touching when we learn that his scarf is actually made from the scales of his foster parent, the Fire Dragon Igneel.

This makes the scarf immune to his flames, but that’s not all it does. It’s been known to protect him in the case of extreme danger, such as being capable of absorbing Zeref’s death magic, though this caused it to lose its white color and turn black instead. This has held him back too, as the scarf has absorbed dark magic before and made it impossible for him to heal from his injuries.

7 HE CAN'T EAT HIS OWN FLAMES

One of the coolest things about all the Dragon Slayers is their ability to consume the magic of the Dragon whose magic they learned. That means, as a Flame Dragon Slayer, Natsu is able to consume any other mages flame magic.

Theoretically, this should mean that Natsu should be able to constantly create flames and eat them, never running out of energy. But very early in the series, it’s established that Natsu actually cannot eat his own flames. This is played for laughs and tension early in the series, as a hungry Natsu that hasn’t consumed any flames is unable to use his magic against the villains.

6 HE IS PART HUMAN, PART DEMON, AND PART DRAGON

As has been mentioned, Natsu was revived by his brother Zeref and transformed into the demon known as “E.N.D.” This means he is already part demon and part human, but that’s not all that Natsu is.

Learning Dragon Slayer magic implants a Dragon Seed inside of every user. The more they use that magic (generally the only kind of magic they know), the more that seed grows. Eventually, it hatches and transforms whoever has it into a dragon as well. At one point, Natsu had all three of these seeds fighting inside of him, though he managed to retain his humanity when it was all over.

5 HE SUFFERS FROM MOTION SICKNESS

Natsu suffers terrible motion sickness when traveling inside of any actual vehicle. This was initially more of a comedic thing that Mashima introduced to give this incredibly powerful character some kind of weakness but later it becomes more of a plot point, as we notice that all Dragon Slayers experience violent reactions to being placed on vehicles.

Near the end of the series, we learn this is because of the Dragon Slayer magic itself. There’s a synchronization that occurs between a human’s ears and a dragon’s superior eyesight that causes the problem. It can be remedied using special enchantments or specially designed vehicles, though mostly it only happens during Fairy Tail’s more comedic moments.

4 HE IS OVER 400 YEARS OLD

Probably the best usage of “he’s actually several hundred years old” anime has. During the Battle of Fairy Tail, we see Natsu trapped inside of a barrier that is supposed to only hold people over 80 years old inside. Though we didn’t know why at the time, this barrier was able to keep Natsu trapped.

Later, we’d learn that Natsu was born four hundred years in the past, during the era of dragons. He spent years training with his partner Igneel, but after being sent through the Eclipse gate into the future, he lost his memory and forgot everything about who he was and what he’d done, other than Igneel being gone.

3 HE WAS BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD

The big secret twist to this series is that Natsu died over four hundred years ago in a dragon attack that killed his parents as well. His brother Zeref was overcome by grief and studied to figure out how to revive his brother if no one else.

His brother spent years trying to figure this out, eventually angering the gods themselves. He became imbued with the Curse of Contradictions that caused him to kill anything he cared about. Still, that didn’t stop him from eventually figuring out how to bring Natsu back to life as “Etherious Natsu Dragneel”, a demon with the power to kill him.

2 HE HAS A DRAGON INSIDE HIM

The mystery of Fairy Tail for much of the series has been where Natsu’s foster parent, Igneel has been. One day, he and the dragons responsible for training Natsu and the other Dragon Slayers all mysteriously vanished, and no one ever saw them. But during the darkest moment, a time where Acnologia awakened to slay many of the dragons which flew through the Eclipse Gate, we finally learned where Igneel had been.

He had been dormant inside of Natsu for centuries, hiding his power until he had the opportunity to battle against Acnologia. There was no return trip inside of Natsu however, as Igneel would go on to fight Acnologia and lose his life in the battle, though he succeeded in taking Acnologia’s arm.

1 HE WAS ORIGINALLY MEANT TO HAVE HORNS

Often times creators go through countless different designs before they decide on what works the best for their characters. After all, the visual design of a character informs the traits a given character will have in a story. In Natsu’s case, the creator originally wanted him to have horns on his head.

In fact, he did have horns in the Fairy Tail short story Fairy Tale. He was a spirit and had a pair of horns on his head, but after he decided to turn it into a full series he turned him back into a human (kind of) and ditched the horns. There’s still a reference to this in one of the Fairy Tail anime episodes, however, shown above.
