Erza and Jellal met each other at the Tower of Heaven where they were held as slaves and forced to build the tower with other slaves. This was where their turbulent relationship began. They were willing to help each other as much as they could and deeply cared for each other, as well as the other kids being forced to work. That all changed when Jellal became deranged and so different from who he used to be that it broke Erza's heart. She was forced to escape the tower alone.
9 Jellal Gave Erza Her Last Name, Scarlet
When they met in the Tower of Heaven, while the other kids were sharing their names, Erza claimed to only have one name. Jellal admired her beautiful scarlet hair and chose her last name to be scarlet so that all he'd have to do to remember the name was remember the color of her hair. This proved rather useful, as while Jellal was being hulled to prison for his crimes, he remembered Scarlet's hair and regained a part of his lost memories.
8 Erza Seemed To Have Learned Some Spells From Jellal
Jellal is an extremely powerful wizard, having been one of the higher ranking members of the Ten Wizard Saints. He practiced a rare and powerful magic known as Heavenly Body Magic. This magic has a variety of powerful spells that each symbolize the heavenly bodies.
One of these is Grand Chariot, a spell that replicates the impact force of a falling meteor. Erza used this spell in one of her fights and it can only point to the fact that her relationship with Jellal had matured into something quite interesting.
7 Jellal Is Very Protective Of Erza
Even when they were still slaves, Jellal was willing to fight against their captors to save Erza. He became even more protective when his memories returned. There were many instances where Jellal appeared out of nowhere to save Erza from certain death, almost as if he was following her. He was ready to bring his full might to bear on anyone who dared to lay a finger on Erza. Even when in a crisis situation, her safety is all he was worried about.
6 Jellal Seems To Only Think About Erza
When Jellal lost his memories, the only name he could remember was Erza's. Even when in prison and when he was defeated by August, all he could think about was her. When he put so much effort into trying to stop Acnologia, it was for Erza. He would think of her and mention her name in his thoughts as if completely enamored by her very being. If given the chance, Jellal would do anything to keep Erza safe.
5 They Were In A Love Triangle Of Sorts
Simon and Jellal both had eyes for Erza ever since they were kids in the Tower of Heaven. Simon even went as far as asking her directly if she loved Jellal. She denied it of course, but it became true in the long run. In a tragic turn of events, Simon was killed by Jellal when the latter was mad with power. Simon gave his life to protect Erza only for Erza to wind up with the same jerk that killed him. It was indeed an unfortunate situation, but fans cannot picture a better partner for Erza than Jellal.
4 Their Relationship Started Out Rocky To Say The Least
During the Tower of Heaven arc, it seemed like Jellal and Erza were ready to destroy each other. They fought briefly but Jellal messed with Erza's feelings to get her to stop fighting and buy some time for himself. When Jellal was resuscitated, Erza didn't even think twice about going to challenge him.
After they had put down Nirvana, Erza let Jellal go to jail for his crimes. She acted tough, but it broke her heart, and she went to a secluded place to cry her eyes out. Their relationship stated out rather rocky, but fans are glad to see how things turned out.
3 Jellal Makes Erza Cry A Lot
Erza became fond of wearing her armor all the time - even as a little girl - as a way to protect her heart from any further pain. This was as a result of Jellal's betrayal at the Tower of Heaven. Ever since then, the thought of Jellal saddened her and she often wept in solitude. It wasn't until Gray followed her that he found out that she cried a lot. Seeing Erza cry made Natsu so angry that he fought and defeated Jellal.

Both Jellal and Erza are comfortable in each other's company, but that's usually when they're talking about something besides their personal life. There's inevitably an awkward moment when the two of them are together as things turn more personal. Jellal and Erza's relationship has a bit of everything thrown in. From turbulence to pure romance, it's well-written and interesting to watch unfold. Unlike the relationship between Natsu and Lucy which is going nowhere fast, Erza and Jellal have taken good strides to ensure that they keep getting along fine. They've fought each other, looked after each other and even fought together. All the spice thrown in their relationship makes it all the more interesting.
