Vin Diesel revealed that Fast & Furious protagonist Dominic Toretto will be getting his backstory explored in F9.

"The whole world has this excitement about this movie coming out, but for those who have been with the franchise, it’s even more special," Diesel told Collider. "Because if you can remember the first movie, you are now going to go before the first movie and understand the first movie even more…that’s cool stuff."

"I’m a [Dungeons & Dragons] head, so that’s like origins stuff," Diesel continued. "To see family members you never thought you would have seen – it’s gonna kind of blow your mind. We’ve been wanting to know: where was Dom before he became Dom? Who were his influences? That’s going to be really rich with story, and a lot of fun to see."

Diesel has portrayed the character of Dominic Toretto for two decades, starting with The Fast and the Furious in 2001. Not only has Diesel reprised the role in seven follow-ups to that film, but he's also portrayed the character in media outside of the movies. For example, Diesel has played Toretto in the children's cartoon Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, the video game Fast & Furious Crossroads and the theme park attraction Fast & Furious: Supercharged.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film arrives in theaters June 25.
