Though Avengers: Endgame marked the end of their time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe and Anthony Russo have been keeping busy producing multiple projects under their AGBO Films banner, including Extraction, directed by their longtime stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave and starring Chris Hemsworth.

During a panel with Collider's Steven Weintraub at CCXP Worlds on Saturday, the Russos discussed plans for the sequel. "I’m still not gonna commit because I think it’s more exciting to surprise people, but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters," Joe Russo said. "So if you’re interested in David Harbour’s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie."

He continued, "We’re trying to find more interesting ways to tell these stories and cross-pollinate them. We’re big fans of just forging new paths in narrative. Can we go backwards and forwards at the same time? Can things that happened in the past affect the movies in the present? What are new ways to tell those stories? And can we see different points of view? Every antagonist is the protagonist in their own story, so can we see their point of view? How do they perceive the world? What makes them empathetic? I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we’d like to diversify the point of view in those movies."

Extraction is based on the graphic novel Ciudad, which the Russo brothers developed with Ande Parks. It follows Tyler Rake, a grizzled mercenary who must rescue the son of a drug lord from a rival criminal's clutches. Extraction currently stands as the most-watched original film on Netflix, with Joe Russo signing a deal to write a sequel shortly after its release.

The Russo Brothers have a rather stacked slate at AGBO, with their next directorial project Cherry debuting in theaters next February and on Apple TV+ in March 2021. They will also re-team with Netflix for the spy thriller The Gray Man, based on the novel of the same name and starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Manoj Bajpayee, Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi, Derek Luke, Marc Donato and David Harbour. It is currently available on Netflix.
