The X-Men are no strangers to memorable Marvel event series, from the "Dark Phoenix Saga" to "X-Cutioner's Song." Each story arc left a lasting impact on the mutants of the Marvel Universe, for better and for worse. The newest event, Extermination, follows this trend by drastically changing the landscape of the X-Men franchise by delivering shocking deaths and surprise resurrections.

Extermination set out to finally send the five time-displaced, original younger X-Men back to their proper place in the timeline. Of course, it couldn't be as simple as Jean Grey, Cyclops, Iceman, Beast and Angel leaving the present day and things going back to normal. No, Extermination had to involve even more time-travelers, new characters and status quo changes.

If you had a hard time keeping track of everything that went down in Extermination #5, then you're in luck. We've taken the time to compile a list of every major change to come from the finale of Extermination and what they all mean for the X-Men going forward.

The Original X-Men Go Back To The Future (Past)

What began in All-New X-Men #1 in 2012 finally came to an end in Extermination #5. Determined to show Cyclops how different he was than the young man who first learned under Professor Charles Xavier, Beast plucked the teenage X-Men from the past and brought them to the current day. While the original X-Men were shocked to meet their older counterparts, their presence wasn't enough to deter Cyclops from being a martyr for mutantkind.

The younger X-Men tried to return home on numerous occasions, with time itself fighting them along the way. The actions of Ahab and the younger Cable (jokingly referred to as Kid Cable) left the time-displaced X-Men with no choice but to finally head back to the past where they belong. However, every memory they collected during their time in the present remained by being transferred to their older selves, preserving their adventures so they wouldn't be erased from existence.

Young Iceman Goes Back In The Closet

One of the major developments to come out of writer Brian Michael Bendis' run on All-New X-Men was the reveal of Iceman being gay. The time-displaced Bobby Drake admitting he was gay was enough for the adult Iceman to finally accept who he is, and was a moment X-Men fans had waited decades for.

But for the X-Men to reset the timeline upon their arrival in the past, they needed to wipe their minds so they wouldn't remember everything that had happened to them. We mentioned earlier how the older X-Men were given these wiped memories, but the one negative is it did make the time-travelers revert back to how they were before Adult Beast showed up -- and in the young Iceman's case, that meant hiding his sexual preference once again.

Many readers took offense to Marvel forcing Iceman back to his previous status quo after such a major change was made to the character, even though the older Iceman still identifies as a gay man. Though the in-story reasoning made sense, it was still a tough pill to swallow for some fans.

Ahab Is Stuck In This Timeline

Every comic needs a villain to harass its heroes, and Marvel chose to dig into the X-Men archives to bring Ahab out of mothballs. Though he's closely tied to Rachel Grey, Ahab hasn't factored into many X-Men stories over the last several years. However, that all changed with Extermination. Ahab came from the future with the sole purpose of murdering the Original Five X-Men to bring about his hellish future where mutants are hunted and killed.

Though he missed out on killing his intended targets, Ahab was responsible for the deaths of Bloodstorm and Mimic, who was impersonating Cyclops at the time. The villain is now stuck in the present day after Cyclops and Kid Cable destroyed his time-traveling ship, which means there is potential for him to become a recurring threat.

Kid Cable Is Sticking Around, Too

"Kid Cable" was yet another time-traveler who played a featured role in Extermination as the character responsible for sending the Original Five X-Men home. Instead of talking to the X-Men and showing them the error in staying in the present, Kid Cable killed the original Cable, hunted and captured the younger X-Men in an attempt to forcibly send them to the past.

He may have come across as a little rough around the edges, just like the dearly departed Cable, but Kid Cable showed his true colors by fighting Ahab alongside the X-Men of all generations. And like Ahab, Kid Cable appears to be sticking around for the long haul, where his story will be picked up in a relaunched title spinning out of Extermination.

X-Force Reassembled

Domino, Cannonball, Warpath, Boom-Boom and Shatterstar were members of Cable's first X-Force team. The five mutants came back together when they learned he was murdered in Extermination #1, determined to avenge Cable's death by tracking down his killer. You can imagine their surprise when it was revealed the shooter was a teenage version of their deceased leader. This information didn't stop the team from trying to find answers as they teamed up with the younger Jean Grey to track Kid Cable down.

The presence of Ahab forced X-Force to team up with Kid Cable, but with Extermination concluded, they will continue searching for Kid Cable in a new monthly comic. With the Adult Cable dead, we wouldn't be surprised to see Kid Cable join X-Force on a full-time basis.

Days Of Future Present

While most X-Men fans fondly remember "Days of Future Past," its follow-up, "Days of Future Present" is largely forgotten. This alternate future introduced readers to both Ahab and Rachel Grey, with the latter being one of the mutants turned into a mutant-tracking Hound. Rachel would travel back to the past to enlist the X-Men's help to defeat Ahab and wound up sticking around.

Rachel was one of the many X-Men turned into a Hound by the twins Manon and Maxime. The younger X-Men found a way to reverse the transformation, but since Rachel was an original Hound, she is now stuck under Ahab's control once again. Now, the next time Ahab comes around with a new villainous scheme, it means Rachel will be by his side to fight her former friends.

An Original X-Man Is Back From The Dead

Marvel revealed it had plans to resurrect Cyclops once solicitations started featuring him in future issues of Uncanny X-Men -- first in a story arc titled "Devastation" and then in a team-up with another back-from-the-dead mutant, Wolverine, in "The Last X-Men." So the question remained of how Cyclops would be revived, and where his first appearance would take place?

The final page of Extermination #5 answered both those questions. The scene saw Kid Cable return to one of his safe houses, where he began talking to someone off camera about the events of the issue. It's then revealed he's speaking to his father, Scott Summers. Cyclops died due to Terrigen poisoning in 2016's Death of X, a storyline that saw him lead his team into all-out war with the Inhumans.

We're led to believe Kid Cable has plucked Cyclops out of the time stream, but after he made such a fuss about the Original Five X-Men needing to go to the past to correct the timeline, this act would make him a hypocrite. Or, there is an important reason Kid Cable broke his own rules, and Cyclops is needed for an even great threat on the horizon. Either way, Cyclops is back and ready to make his presence felt in the X-Men once again.
