<i>Expendables 2</i> Co-Writer to Pen <i> Masters of the Universe</i> Script

Eternia finally may return to the big screen, if Sony has anything to say about it (and it does, as the studio owns the film rights to the ’80s animated series and Mattel action figure line). Variety reports that Richard Wenk has been tapped to rewrite a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe script for attached director Jon M. Chu (Step Up 3D, G.I. Joe: Retaliation).

Wenk is popular at Sony for writing the upcoming adaptation of the television drama The Equalizer. He also co-wrote The Expendables 2 and penned 2006’s 16 Blocks.

The ’80s property began life as a Mattel toy line and Filmation animated series featuring the adventures of Prince Adam, the meek member of the Eternian royal family who, with the raising of a sword, can transform into the powerful hero He-Man. He-Man and his pals Man-At-Arms, Teela and the rest fight Skeletor, Beast Man and Evil-Lyn.

He-Man was previously adapted in the 1987 film Masters of the Universe mostly based on Earth and starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. The cartoon was rebooted in 2002 and lasted three seasons, but the toy line continues on Mattel’s collector-oriented site
