WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Expanse Season 5, Episode 5, "Down and Out," available now on Amazon Prime Video.

The opening episode of The Expanse Season 5, included a glimpse at the Augustin Gamarra memorial on Lovell City, Luna. The lunar memorial commemorated a ship that was destroyed by Marco Inaros using code Naomi created to monitor engine containment fields. Marco changed the code to overload the ship's engines and kill everyone on board. In The Expanse, Season 5, Episode 5, "Down and Out," Naomi's code has come back to haunt her once more as she deduces Inaros has managed to get the code into the Rocinante's computers.

The Rocinante was docked at Tycho Station following its return from Ilus and Naomi was working with Tycho's chief engineer, Sakai, to repair and upgrade the ship. Naomi eventually left to go to Pallas Station in a bid to reconnect with Filip, her estranged son, leaving the repairs to Sakai and her team. But as revealed in Season 5, Episode 4, "Gaugamela," Sakai was working for Inaros all along, and helped him acquire the last protomolecule sample from Fred Johnson. Despite this, it seems that nobody questioned the engineer's work on the Rocinante -- that is until Filip tells Naomi that by taking her prisoner in the third episode of Season 5, "Mother," he'd saved her life.

While in custody on Marco's ship the Pella, Naomi has had limited access to systems. When not confined to her quarters, she only has access to door controls, which allow her to move about freely but little else. Her frustration with Marco's persistent mind games lead her to make an attempt on his life. She conceals a knife from the ship's kitchen and makes her way to the bridge, but Filip catches her in the act. Instead of revealing her true intentions, however, he simply removes her from the bridge. It is here that he makes it clear his actions saved Naomi, leaving her to suspect the Rocinante has been sabotaged.

Without access to the Pella's systems she is unable to find out for sure, so she goes to Cyn to find out. She makes polite conversation with the large Belter, eventually asking if the Gamarra code was slipped into the Roci's computers. Cyn's expression confirms her fears, leading her to strike the man with a wrench, take his comm unit and use his system access to get a warning to James Holden. Naomi is subsequently confined to her quarters and denied any information about what happened to the Roci, leaving her unsure if her warning got through.

Fortunately, Naomi reached Holden just in the nick of time. Holden and his makeshift crew were about to go after the Zemya, the ship that escaped Tycho with the protomolecule sample, and they would have died had they completed the ship's startup sequence. Thankfully, Holden powered down the engines, saving the now-iconic ship from a fiery disaster in the Tycho docks. The Roci's captain will now likely go after Inaros even more fervently as his plans have included an attack on Holden's home, his ship and his life. Furthermore, since Naomi also revealed she is being held captive by Marco in her message, the Earther has yet another reason to go after the Belter terrorist.
