What if Wytches were real, but they weren't green-skinned, pointy hatted hags, or people who cast spells?
What if Wytches were something else all together? An evolutionary off-shoot of humans, larger, primitive, cannibalistic…living in burrows beneath the ground except when they prey on us, hiding in the woods with both eyes on one side of their head, all the better to peek around trees…
What if they had their own ancient science, and were capable of making crude medicines out of bone and blood and rotten things - medicines that could do amazing things? Cure terminal illnesses. Prolong life…anything you want.
And what if all you needed to do to get some of that medicine was to mark someone for the Wytches, to "pledge" someone, so that the Wytches know to come drag that person off in the night to their burrow? Would you do it? Pledge that rotten neighbor next door who beats his wife? Pledge a stranger to save your child? Would your neighbor pledge you? What if he already has?
