"The Red Hood" is a moniker fraught with meaning in DC Comics' Batman world. While in recent years the name has been taken over by former Robin Jason Todd, it's most recognizable for being a major part of the Joker's most famous origin -- his previous identity as a comparatively saner criminal. It's also the name of a gang introduced by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo during their currently unfolding, widely acclaimed "Batman" run. A similar take shows up in this exclusive "Gotham" clip from Fox, featuring the debut of the Red Hood Gang on tonight's episode, "Red Hood."

Last month, series creator and executive producer Bruno Heller spoke with CBR News about the significance of the Red Hood's arrival -- specifically the use of a mask in the pre-Batman world of "Gotham" -- to the show in general going forward.

"There's going to be an episode that involves the Red Hood, which picks up that strand, the costume strand, and sort of gives a kind of philosophical base, if that's not too pretentious a word," Heller told CBR. "Why costumes? What's the power of costumes? What's the power of a mask? All of that groundwork will be laid sort of culturally for that side of the DC Universe before we start rolling into the more spectacular spandex type of deal."

The latest episode of "Gotham," titled "Red Hood," is slated to air 8 tonight on Fox. The network's full description of the episode follows below.
