EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Meets Mondo in Upcoming Exhibition

Mike Mitchell‘s art has captured multiple figures in pop culture, including Conan O’Brien — his “I’m With Coco” painting became a widely circulating rallying cry during the host’s time away from late night — and SpongeBob SquarePants, who he conceptualized as a victim of the 2010 BP oil spill.

There are few players in current pop culture more powerful than Marvel’s superheroes and villains, and a series of Mitchell’s character portraits immortalizing the characters goes on display at the “Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo” exhibition at Mondo Gallery in Austin, from April 25 through May 17. In Mondo’s press release, Mitchell is quoted as saying Marvel was an integral part of his growing up, and that he’s particularly intrigued by the “humanizing quality” of the characters.

CBR News has the exclusive reveal of three of Mitchell’s Marvel portraits that will be a part of the show: Spider-Man, the aforementioned Luke Cage and Bullseye.

“I picked my personal favorites, while also considering which characters would make decent portraits,” Mitchell told CBR News. “I can’t explain why, but I love the original Luke Cage design. There’s something very cool and timeless about him. Even though we live in an era where that version is out of style, I highly prefer it to the current, shaved head, yellow shirt and sunglasses Luke Cage.”

Mitchell’s Marvel portraits takes inspiration from a variety of eras, though: “I think anyone who grew up in the early ’90s can agree that Gambit is just cool as hell,” he added.

“Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo” opens with an event 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Mondo Gallery on 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, Texas, with Mitchell in attendance.
