The illustrated re-telling of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi epic continues in DUNE: The Graphic Novel, Book 2: Muad'Dib.

Adapted by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson (the authors behind the expanded Dune universe) and illustrated by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín with cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz, the second volume of DUNE: The Graphic Novel is on sale as of today, Aug. 9. Publisher Abrams ComicArts has provided CBR with an exclusive look at a two-page spread from inside the book, featuring the scene where Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Duncan Idaho and Dr. Liet-Kynes take refuge at an ecological testing station.

By this point in the story, House Atreides has been all but decimated by the combined forces of House Harkonnen and Sardaukar troops provided by the Padishah Emperor. As the new Duke of House Atreides following the death of his father, Paul tasks Dr. Kynes with exposing the Emperor's treachery. Dr. Kynes warns that this will inevitably lead to civil war between the Imperium and the Great Houses of the Landsraad. However, Paul has a plan to both seize the throne and sidestep such a conflict. Those already familiar with Dune will know that Paul's plan is to marry one of the Emperor's daughters, thus giving him a legitimate claim to the throne.

DUNE: The Graphic Novel, Book 2: Muad'Dib is the second of three volumes adapting Frank Herbert's original novel in comic form. "In DUNE: The Graphic Novel, Book 2: Muad'Dib, young Paul Atreides and his mother, the lady Jessica, find themselves stranded in the deep desert of Arrakis," an official synopsis reads. "Betrayed by one of their own and destroyed by their greatest enemy, Paul and Jessica must find the mysterious Fremen or perish. This faithful adaptation of the 1965 novel continues to explore Paul's journey as he evolves from boy to mysterious messiah."

The Spice Must Flow

Frank Herbert's Dune was first published in 1965, originally being serialized in Analog magazine. Herbert went on to author five sequels: Dune Messiah (1969), Children of Dune (1976), God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984) and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985). The original Dune was adapted into the 1984 film of the same name, directed by David Lynch. The novel was later adapted into Frank Herbert's Dune, a television miniseries that aired on the Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) in 2000. Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, a follow-up miniseries adapting both Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, aired in 2003.

Most recently, Herbert's first Dune novel was adapted into the 2021 film of the same name, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve's film adapts roughly the first half of the book. The director is returning to helm a sequel, which will cover the latter half. Dune: Part Two is currently slated to release in theaters on Nov. 17, 2023.
