The following contains spoilers for X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1, on sale now, from Marvel Comis, as well as Immortal X-Men #14, on sale next week

Professor Charles Xavier deals with the stunning tragedy at this year's Hellfire Gala, a tragedy that he blames himself for, in a CBR exclusive preview of next week's Immortal X-Men #14.

Immortal X-Men #14 comes from writer Kieron Gillen, artist Lucas Werneck, color artist David Curiel, letterer Clayton Cowles, with another striking cover from regular cover artist, Mark Brooks. A week ago, the X-Men suffered a surprise attack by the anti-mutant group, Orchis, at this year's Hellfire Gala (the annual celebration where the mutants get to show off for the rest of the world, including revealing a new lineup for the main X-Men team).

Not only were a number of mutants outright killed, Doctor Stasis, the Nathaniel Essex clone who is one of the leaders of the group, revealed that he had been doctoring the medicine that the X-Men had been providing humanity in exchange for the mutant nation of Krakoa to be allowed to exist. He then blackmailed Xavier into using his powerful telepathy to force all the X-Men offworld (the X-Men also have a home on Mars, which they terraformed at a previous Hellfire Gala). Rogue saved Xavier from being killed by Orchis leader, and former Xavier lover, Moira MacTaggert, but then he discovered that the mutants he sent through the gates were actually all KILLED!

In reality, the mutants were not killed, but instead strewn across the Marvel Universe, and so Xavier cannot find them, but he still THINKS that he just murdered hundreds of thousands of his fellow mutants (except for the veteran X-Men members who were able to use their training to resist Xavier's commands).

In these exclusive preview pages, naturally, we see Xavier in a BAD STATE about everything that went down. He's essentially been catatonic ever since Rogue left him on the now-deserted Krakoa at the end of X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1. He has just been reliving that awful night over and over in his mind.

However, in these preview pages, for the first time, we learn something new about what happened before the Hellfire Gala. In X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1, when Xavier forced all of the mutants to leave Earth through the teleportation gates, something went haywire in Mystique's brain, and she threw herself off of a cliff, landing in the rocks below. Doctor Stasis was happy to see that happen, and so he didn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but as it turns out, just like the Romans, he, too, really should have looked said gift horse in the mouth, as the precognitive mutant, Destiny, told Xavier to take Mystique off of the board, so it is likely that her "death" was staged.

We will find out more when this issue is released next week, August 9.
