Following his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in this year's blockbuster "Captain America: Civil War," plenty of moviegoers are incredibly excited to see how the new Spider-Man -- played by tom Holland -- will fit into the larger Marvel movie-verse. And there's one possibly surprising face amongst the crowd of Marvel Spidey fans: previous Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield.

Garfield, who played the web-slinger in 2012's "Amazing Spider-Man" and 2014's "Amazing Spider-Man 2," is actually more than happy to see a fresh face underneath the hero's iconic webbed mask. As he revealed in an interview with Fandango, Garfield is as excited as any Marvel fan to see this new Spidey swing onto the silver screen.

"If I am being totally honest, I am so excited Spider-Man is back in the hands of Marvel," said Garfield. "I think that's a really awesome move. It was a move that I've been advocating since I was offered the Spider-Man gig five or six years ago. I'm also excited for Tom Holland. I think he's a very emotional, truthful, funny, physical actor, and I love the filmmaker -- it all really couldn't be in any better hands. I'm really stoked for it."

The arrival of Tom Holland's Spider-Man came at the expense of Garfield's run with the character; a third "Amazing Spider-Man" film starring Garfield was in the works at Sony until the studio forged a deal to share the character with Marvel Studios. This move meant that the character had to be totally rebooted in order to fit into Marvel's shared Avengers film franchise. But that all worked out for the best, Garfield posits, because if he had done "Amazing Spider-Man 3," he might not have gotten the chance to work with some big Hollywood names.

"To be honest, I would not have been able to work with Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese if I had done 'Spider-Man 3,'" said Garfield, who was directed by Gibson in "Hacksaw Ridge" and Scorsese in "Silence." "I'm incredibly grateful that I get to now go and watch another man play Spider-Man who I think is a fantastic actor in Tom Holland."

The sprawling cast also features Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Marisa Tomei as May Parker and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, joined by Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Donald Glover, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Hannibal Buress and many more. And of course Stan Lee will have his traditional cameo.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” arrives in theaters July 7, 2017.
