A new trailer for Australian crime thriller Son of a Gun has debuted, featuring Ewan McGregor as you've never seen him before -- that is, if you've only ever seen him as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The ex-Jedi has traded in his robes for tattoos to play criminal mastermind Brendan Lynch, a tough-talking bad guy with a precise plan to steal $4.5 million in gold. By his side is his young potential protege, played by Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent), who gets more than a bit distracted from his criminal duties when Alicia Vikander's character walks into the picture.

Son of a Gun comes from writer and director Julius Avery, who makes his feature debut with this project following a decade of short films. Judging by the trailer, the scope for Avery's latest endeavor is pretty big; McGregor and Thwaites come to blows on land and at sea and ride around in helicopters and fast cars.

Son of a Gun opened last month in October, and will debut Jan. 15 in the United Kingdom.
