With their return to the Star Wars franchise in the Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi imminent, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen looked back at the negative reactions to the prequel trilogy.

"I found it quite hard," McGregor told Entertainment Weekly. "For it to come out and get knocked so hard was personally quite difficult to deal with. And also, it was quite early in my career. I didn't really know how to deal with that. I'd been involved with things that just didn't make much of a ripple, but that's different from making something that makes a negative ripple."

Dealing with the criticism wasn't any easier for Christensen. "When the films came out and the critics were very critical, of course that was a difficult thing -- because you care so much about this thing that you've invested so much of yourself into," he said. "So, for sure, that's challenging."

McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in all three Star Wars prequels, from 1999's The Phantom Menace to 2005's Revenge of the Sith. Christensen first stepped into a galaxy, far, far away in the middle of the trilogy for 2002's Attack of the Clones as Anakin Skywalker and reprised the role in Revenge of the Sith. The trilogy was generally poorly received at the time of release and has continued to receive criticism, although recent Star Wars properties such as The Book of Boba Fett have made a few well-received callbacks to the prequels.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will see McGregor and Christensen return to Star Wars for the first time since Revenge of the Sith. McGregor spoke about getting the opportunity to work with Christensen once more. "I think it's no secret that Hayden Christensen comes back and we got to play scenes together again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, and it was great to work with him again," he said.

The limited series is set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, which saw the destruction of the Galatic Republic and the rise of the Empire. It was also the location for the brutal showdown between Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, where the Master was victorious and the ex-Padawan began his transformation into Darth Vader. According to McGregor, the series will find the Jedi Master in a dark state of mind. "We find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story rather broken," McGregor said. "And faithless, and beaten, somewhat given up."

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 25.
