The $2.7 million value of the Evolved Apes NFT series is missing and the creator, "Evil Ape," has gone offline.

BeInCrypto reports The Evolved Apes website is down, as are its other social media accounts. The ledger at its 798 Ether page shows a balance of $0, and Evil Ape's Twitter account, @evolvedapesnft, has been deleted.

One of Evolved Apes' investors told Motherboard, "What has happened is that Evil Ape has washed his hands of the project taking away the wallet with all the ETH from minting that was to be used for everything, from paying the artist, paying out cash giveaways, paying for marketing, paying for rarity tools, developing the game and everything else in between."

There were 10,000 non-fungible tokens in the Evolved Apes series, which was meant to be a fighting game in which apes battle among themselves for supremacy. The lost funds were earmarked for marketing and development, but the artist who created the images has not been paid, one of the signs a rug pull was pending.

However, the NFT holders will retool the series, under the name Fight Back Apes, with a multi-sig wallet, which will not allow Evil Ape access to any funds generated from the new version.
