WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Evil Season 2, Episode 5, "Z Is for Zombie," now streaming on Paramount+.

Evil's fifth episode opens with a lesson from Father Mulvehill. "Throughout every religion and mythology, there is the story of the destroyer — Lucifer, the Devil," Mulvehill explains to David and his cohort of priests-in-training. "He is as timeless as the Creator and, despite what the modern world would have you believe, He is just as real today as He ever has been." Now, knowing Father Mulvehill, he is almost certainly referring to actual demons and devils, spirits that he believes cause individuals to act upon their evil inclinations. But, as Evil has shown time and time again, destructive forces do not necessarily have to be supernatural. Sometimes, the monster is just a click — or promotion — away.

During the lesson, David notices Mulvehill bleeding from the back and a general change in his demeanor. Mulvehill agrees to be assessed on the condition that David and his team keep the investigation confidential. During his interview with Kristen, he confesses to gambling online, an addiction he suffered from as a younger man but gave up after he took the cloth. David believes this has something to do with Leland and his exorcisms, while Kristen sees it as warning signs of mania. However, after looking at Mulvehill's computer, Ben chalks it up to online advertising and keyword algorithms. But there's more to the story. Mulvehill has also deleted all his emails, leading Ben to believe the priest is hiding something.

Later that night, while researching gambling and addiction, Kristen notices that she too is getting social media ads, except hers are for secret affair websites. "Social media has a mind of its own. It guesses what you may want," Ben tells Kristen, who gets a visit from the jinn from back from Episode 3. The jinn taunts Kristen with some suggestive movements, harkening back to Kristen's near sexual adventure with Colin — or Lance. Who remembers?

Meanwhile, Ben discovers that Mulvehill has $40,000 in gambling debt. While monitoring Leland's computer, he also learns that Mulvehill is seemingly helping Leland fake his exorcisms and that the psychopath knows about the priest's debt. David confronts Mulvehill and offers him an ultimatum: he either enters a rehab program or David goes to the bishop. Mulvehill does not take kindly to David's threat, so David enlists Sister Andrea to accompany him and Mulvehill for his next exorcism on Leland.

The next night, Mulvehill collapses during Leland's exorcism, but Sister Andrea and David intervene. They splash Leland with holy water, causing him to run out terrified as his skin burns and smokes. Kristen and David are left awestruck, but little do they know that Sister Andrea swapped out the holy water with ammonia, which explains why Leland's skin burned.

But social media is not the only technological demon this episode of Evil turns its attention to. While watching zombie movies with her next-door neighbor — and totally roasting The Walking Dead — Lila and Alex hear a noise outside and discover fresh blood on the pavement. Meanwhile, Alex's dad Brandon is acting very strangely, coming home with burns on his hands and staring at the wall after work. The two figure out that his job at CongoRun — think Amazon — as a warehouse worker, with its low pay and poor working conditions, is turning him into a zombie, draining him of his energy and leading to injuries on his hands and feet.

To save Alex's dad, Lila and her friend go to a spice shop that apparently deals with zombies. The shopkeeper recognizes the evil within CongoRun, comparing it to the Haitian slave drivers, and gives them two potions: one for Alex's dad and one for her boss. They give the first one to Brandon, which causes him to oversleep. He calls his boss in a panic to apologize, only to learn that the factory suffered from a gas leak, injuring all the workers on site. Energized by the tragedy, Alex's dad leads a unionization effort, earning him a threatening visit from his supervisor. Alex and Lila use the chaos to sneak the second potion into some of the supervisor's food.

The next day, Alex and Lila learn that the supervisor has been fired for coming into the office inebriated. The company offers Alex's father the job, which he accepts. However, instead of working to improve his friends' conditions at the warehouse, he becomes just like his previous supervisor, pushing his employees to work harder under harsh conditions. The slave becomes the slave driver. Another monster is born.
