Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has announced that filming has begun on his new horror sequel.

"Day 1. #EvilDeadRise," Cronin wrote on Twitter. The tweet was accompanied by an image of the film's clapperboard, which revealed that the feature's director of photography will be Dave Garbett. Previously, Garbett worked on the cinematography for select episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Previously, Evil Dead Rise was confirmed to focus on two sisters who get reunited just as a wave of supernatural horrors enter their lives. Unlike its predecessors, Evil Dead Rise will take place in the city and will also eschew a theatrical release in exchange for an HBO Max streaming premiere.

"I'm thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company's history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself," executive producer Sam Raimi previously said about Evil Dead Rise. "I'm equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise."

Directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan. The film arrives on HBO Max in 2022.
