A brand new behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming film Evil Dead Rise showcases a lot of blood and gore.

Posted on Twitter by the film's director, Lee Cronin, the photo shows a hallway drenched in blood. Cronin noted that the photo was taken "this time last year" on a "particularly messy day" on set.

The fifth installment in the beloved franchise, Evil Dead: Rise is set to come out in theaters on April 21, 2023. Cronin announced the decision on Twitter, revealing that the film would be "Exclusively in theatres." This decision surprised some people, as back in May, it was announced that the film would debut exclusively on HBO Max.

This decision was allegedly largely due to the fact that the film performed really well at test screenings. Back in July, one of the film's producers and longtime Evil Dead actor Bruce Campbell theorized that the film would move to the big screen, explaining, "We just had a preview that went... That was very high ratings. They were potentially going to stream it on HBO Max, but it might go theatrical. Maybe in the fall."

Evil Dead Is Moving Up

Campbell also explained that fans of Evil Dead films can expect something a little different from this one. He said that this is "an urban version of Evil Dead now," and will follow a single mom living in a city apartment. Even though the film is set to stray pretty far from the cabin in the woods that audiences know and love, Campbell is still confident that it will be a hit. "It's going to creep your shit out," he said.

Rise wrapped in October 2021 in New Zealand, but production didn't come without its fair share of hurdles. To celebrate wrapping on filming, Cronin posted an Evil Dead: Rise BTS photo on Twitter, adding that the process came with "8 months, 1 Covid Lockdown, 6,500 litres of blood."

Produced by Robert G. Tapart, Campbell, New Line Cinema, and Ghost House Pictures, Rise follows a family attempting to ward off demonic creatures called Deadites. The film stars The Mist's Alyssa Sutherland, Jungle's Lily Sullivan, Reminiscence's Gabrielle Echols, The Hunter's Morgan Davies, Northspur's Nell Fisher, and Clickbait's Mia Challis.
