Just as an Army of Darkness sequel appears on the horizon, the Evil Dead reboot begins to fade away.

Director Fede Alvarez and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues will not return for Evil Dead 2, as Sayagues explained in an interview with DesdeHollywood.com.

"I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won't happen," he said. "Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don't know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project."

Sayagues' revelation comes shortly after Evil Dead producer and original star Bruce Campbell announced plans for Army of Darkness 2, continuing the tales of the chainsaw-handed Ash Williams. With Alvarez and Sayagues out of the picture and the return of Ash apparently on the frontburner, it's now unclear how or if Evil Dead 2 will move forward from here.
