It seems there may be a new metaverse mega metropolis coming soon, and its name is Everywhere. It was the first new game to be revealed at Gamescom this year. The audience was shown a confusing trailer containing gameplay from at least four different genres. With so much going on, it was hard to make heads or tails of what it was supposed to be until it was explained by indie developer, Build a Rocket Boy. Their representative said it would be a game "where players can meet, have fun, and create their own story," labeling it a "multi-world experience." It's a game aspiring to have everything -- an idea that has repeatedly failed in the past.

There have been a few indie developers who have tried or promised to deliver a game that is nearly every gamer's dream -- a boundless open, multiplayer, or co-op world where players can fully customize their character, choose a job from running a delivery service to being an assassin with systems to match. Promises have been made of a slew of skills, a customizable home base, the ability to craft nearly anything, PvE, PvP, and all with balanced gameplay. It's a mythical beast that's too nuanced and complex to implement, but it hasn't stopped developers from trying. Everywhere is merely the latest attempt.

A world in Everywhere

Currently, Everywhere is extremely vague in its description and its trailer, and the official website offers little clarification on what exactly it's aiming to accomplish. Its Reddit sub is filled with questions from interested fans. There have also been concerns about it being an NFT and/or crypto game due to developer job descriptions for blockchain technologies and the very generally worded description resembling "NFTs in gaming" rhetoric. Build a Rocket Boy has responded, saying they are simply researching the technology, which means there is a chance Everywhere will in fact include NFTs and/or cryptocurrency. However, a lot about the game is still up in the air.

Despite this and a lack of any actual gameplay shown, Build a Rocket Boy claims the game will be ready for release in 2023. The studio appears to have a large team and is hiring several more people, but it still looks like a lot of work. For an ambitious game by a relatively unknown studio with no prior releases, it seems unlikely it will be ready in time, even with industry veterans on the team. Similar projects that have come before it like Identity, Yogventures, and Areal all promised the sun and stars but ultimately died in development. Even the ones that did release have often disappointed. Everywhere may be the next to succumb to open-world failure, or worse, turn out to be another NFT game with empty promises.
