Mob Psycho 100 Season 2: Building Emotions and Characters

Ed Checks Up On Faye In Cowboy Bebop

Mob Psycho 100's second season builds emotional complexity between Mob and his relationships with the cast introduced in season one. Mob is steadily growing as a person and has begun making his own judgments and decisions. Viewers see him fail at delivering a speech, being confessed to, and being offered a position as the leader to his own cult over the course of a single episode. The focus begins to shift away from comedy as the story progresses, although these elements are still present and very much a core component of Mob Psycho 100.

Much of the focus in the second season follows the relationship between Reigen and Mob.While Mob has always viewed Reigen with admiration and respect, so Mob's decision to stand up for himself served a clear sign of his emotional growth a decision wasn’t unrealistic or unexpected. Reigen himself questions motivations and morals for using Mob and is met with the consequences of his actions when he is outed as a fraud on live television. The pair eventually reconcile, with Mob recognizing that Reigen, while flawed, is a genuinely good person. The space between the two central characters also gives Reigen room to grow as an individual.

Mob’s morals and values are further challenged when he encounters Toichiro, a powerful psychic drunk on his own power. In their final showdown, there is a moment where Mob too seemed to succumb to his power. The sight of Ritsu pulls him out of it, and Mob realizes that he could have been just like Toichiro if he never learned to control his power.
