The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All at Once, now in theaters.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff became an unhinged Scarlet Witch. She went on a bloody rampage, mercilessly killing mages at Kamar-Taj and slaughtering members of the Illuminati to find a way to hop into a reality where she could parent her twins. And as Wanda scoured different universes, it drew comparisons to Everything Everywhere All at Once, which also dealt with a reality-hopping villain. However, that movie produced a better Scarlet Witch than the Marvel Cinematic Universe for one reason: the dark endgame.

In Everything Everywhere All at Once, the villain was the reality-bending Jobu Tupaki, the variant of Evelyn's daughter from the Alpha Earth. She roamed realities, killing her family and seeking to conquer one particular universe for a bagel made with her godlike powers that would destroy the Multiverse. Now, the motives are different, but compared to Marvel Comic's Wanda, Jobu's a much better version of the Scarlet Witch.

In the comics, Wanda lost her boys after she had to destroy her fake world in House of M. It led to her decreeing, "No More Mutants," and casting a spell, almost rendering her species extinct. Wanda realized she had nothing to live for after the mutants and their various wars created a world that would fear them and offer nothing. It was very existential and left Wanda trying to eliminate everything and everyone that hurt her.

Jobu went down a similar path because Evelyn took away all her freedom and tried to make her a weapon. She got robbed of her childhood, which Evelyns all over the multiverse did to their daughters. Jobu knew there'd never be a mom who'd understand her, just like Wanda couldn't find a world that would accept her. However, the MCU's Wanda took the awkward route of trying to force her way into a world with Billy and Tommy. It resulted in her shifting her moral compass, with the Darkhold's corruption taking hold. But that shouldn't have been what Wanda went after, especially since it'd have been unnatural and tough to dupe her kids.

Jobu Tupaki bent reality better than Thanos

In reality, she should have become a destroyer like Jobu or comic Wanda, as she had nothing left. Instead, Jobu got a better crisis of conscience, realizing paradise was unattainable and nothing truly mattered. It was way more tragic, and this extreme choice made the emotions involved more nuanced than the MCU Wanda trying to fake a home.

Control never worked for Wanda before, so she shouldn't have had such idealistic goals, especially after failing to gain it in WandaVision. But in Jobu's case, her rage was more relatable because she knew, no matter how much she faked happiness, it wouldn't have been real. And that realization gave Jobu the more sinister, intimidating mission and made her a much more terrifying villain.

To see how Wanda compares to Jobu, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in theaters now.
