A trailer for Detective Pikachu has dropped, giving us our first look at Nintendo's collectible monsters rendered in all their slightly disconcerting CGI glory. Based on the 2016 Nintendo 3DS game of the same name, the film follows Ryme City resident, Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) and his new, unlikely partner, a one-of-a-kind talking Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) who has aspirations to become the Sherlock Holmes of the Pokemon world.

While we don't see anything close to all 802 Pokemon currently in existence in this 2 minute and 22 second-long trailer, Warner Brothers have managed to cram more of your favorite pocket monsters in than you might have realized. Let's count 'em all!

DODRIO

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Weirdly, this relatively obscure first generation Pokemon is the first one we get a clear glimpse of in the trailer. You can see the three-headed roadrunner walking into Ryme City in the opening shots. Dodrio is the fully evolved form of the bi-headed, Doduo.

CHARMANDER & JOLTIK

Detective Pikachu Trailer

As one of the first generation's starter Pokemon, this little flaming lizard needs almost no introduction. The first Pokemon in Charizard's evolutionary line, Charmander has been the Fire-type of choice for some of the franchise's most iconic trainers, like Ash, Red and Alain.

And, just behind Charmander, the fifth generation's Bug/Electric-type Joltik appears to be scurrying into the shadows.

COMFEY

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Is it a bird? Is it a Poke-plane? No, it's a... flying wreath of flowers? This Fairy-type Pokemon is one of the newest monsters featured in the trailer, first appearing in the Alola region in Pokemon Sun and Moon. If you squint, you can see one flitting above Ryme City (to the left of Tim's head) amongst some of the many, many bird-based 'mons of the franchise.

WOOPER, VICTINI, PETILI & VANILITE

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The faces of Wooper, Victini, Petili and what appears to be Vanilite are used as logos on a building in the opening shots of the city. As the only Mythical Pokemon in the trailer, Victini is the most noteworthy.

Mythical Pokemon are similar to Legendaries in their one-off-ness, but made distinct by being event-exclusives in the games. In the franchise's mythology, they're so rarely sighted they're thought to be -- yes, you've guessed it -- mythical.

PSYDUCK & GENGAR

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The headache-prone Psyduck flanks budding journalist, Lucy, as she stares at something in the distance from outside a car. This first generation Water-type was made famous outside of the games as the bane of Misty's life in the anime, unable to stay in its Poke Ball for long or follow her commands. Its dopey persona belies the powerful Psychic-type it becomes when evolved.

While Gengar doesn't physically pop up in the trailer, its unmistakable purple body can be spotted next to Lucy as a huge inflatable. Gengar is one of the strongest and beloved Ghost-types. In fact, it's one of the first Pokemon you ever see in the games -- battling a Nidoran in Red and Blue's title sequences. It's also the subject of one of the games' oldest and creepiest urban legends.

BLASTOISE, BLAZIKEN & RAYQUAZA

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Blastoise is one of many monsters that appear on posters in Tim's bedroom, this one on the left of his door. It doesn't get as prominent a feature as Charizard -- who shows up in the scaly flesh later on -- but it's still a cute nod to the fully evolved form of the first Water-type starter.

The third poster is a little hard to make out but our best guess is that it's the final evolution of the third generation's Fire-type starter, Blaziken -- possibly in its Mega-Evolved form. This fiery chicken once fought a blistering battle with Ash's Charizard in the anime.

Rayquaza takes pride of place as a snaking wall sticker. Even among the over-powered Legendary tier, the third generation's Flying/Dragon-type is an absolute beast. In the "Delta Episode" of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player can ride it into space to fight an epic battle against the Legendary, Deoxys.

DRAGONITE & HYPNO, ARTICUNO & STEELIX

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The first set of poster-bound competitors in Tim's bedroom are from the first generation; Hypno is the Psychic-type evolution of the "dream eating" Drowzee and Dragonite is the cuddly Dragon-type that Mewtwo uses as a mailman in Pokemon: The First Movie.

The next poster along has Steelix -- the Steel-type second generation evolution of Onix the "rock snake" -- while Pokemon Go players will recognize Articuno as one of the three Legendary birds that were the first to be available for capture in the popular mobile game.

RESHIRAM & ZEKROM

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Zekrom and Reshiram can be spotted locked in battle on the poster behind Tim's head in this scene. This pair of Legendary dragons serve as the game mascots for Black and White and, along with Kyurem, make up the Tao trio. According to Pokemon mythology they were once one single being, responsible for the Unova region's creation.

EMOLGA & UNOWN

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The trio of critters gathered on a rooftop in the market sequence are one of the franchise's numerous Pikachu clones, these ones being the fifth generation's Electric/Flying-type, Emolga. The cute squirrel creature gained greater exposure when it joined Iris' team in the Best Wishes series.

There's also another sneaky reference just behind the Emolga cluster, featuring one of the second generation's mysterious Unown; a unique family of Psychic-types that come in 28 different forms representing letters of the Latin alphabet.

PANCHAM

Detective Pikachu Trailer

This sixth generation Fighting-type's face appears on a "Missing" poster in the police station next to Squirtle's -- who turns up later on. Its evolved form is the formidable Pangoro, and it became part of Serena's team in the X/Y series.

BULBASAUR & MORLULL

Detective Pikachu Trailer

We're treated to a whole troupe of the first generation's Grass-type starter splashing through a river with Tim. Bulbasaur is the first in Venosaur's evolutionary line, and has sadly long been overshadowed by its two Fire and Water-type counterparts who serve as game mascots for Red and Blue.

Wondering what those weird, glowing mushrooms are? They're Morelull, a Grass/Fairy-type from the Alola region. They evolve into Shiinotic, which looks like a grinning fungal demon. (Seriously.)

JIGGLYPUFF, MACHAMP & PRIMEAPE

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Jigglypuff is one of the most recognizable faces in Pokemon, which is why it gets a pretty prominent cameo in this trailer. This one, clutching a microphone next to a sleeping patron, is clearly a reference to the irritable one that terrorized Ash and co for sleeping through her singing recitals.

The poster on the left advertizes another battle event, this one between two of the first generation's most notorious brawlers: the four-armed Machamp and the monkey rage-ball, Primeape.

GRENINJA

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The sight of multiple Greninja's leaping into action would have been a particular delight for Japanese fans given that the final evolution of the sixth generation's Water-type starter is more popular than Pikachu there. This stealthy frog is also famous for being the first Pokemon to physically merge with Ash, becoming Ash-Greninja.

CHARIZARD

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The fully evolved form of the first generation's Fire-type starter is one of Pokemon's most enduring monsters, and it shows in how much screen-time it gets in this trailer. Older fans will remember Ash's "poorly trained" one, and more recently, the fire-breathing lizard was finally made an official dragon with two Mega-Evolution variants.

SQUIRTLE

Detective Pikachu Trailer

Squirtle's appearance on the right of Tim and Detective Pikachu makes us three-for-three with the iconic Kanto starter set. (If only he'd also been wearing sunglasses...)

RUFFLET

Detective Pikachu Trailer

The sight of this Normal/Flying-type from the fifth generation on the left of Detective Pikachu is perhaps the deepest cut in this trailer. This aggressive chick evolves into the noble eagle, Braviary.

MR. MIME

Detective Pikachu Trailer

One of the highlights of the whole trailer is the Mr. Mime interrogation scene, showcasing the brilliant absurdity of this first generation Psychic/Fairy-type. Next on our wishlist is seeing Ryme City Police Department employing Smeargle as a sketch artist.
