Another day, another new Joker film announced as being in development. This time, the honor of starring in the project belongs to Jared Leto, who first debuted his take on the iconic villain in 2016's Suicide Squad.
The film is said to still be in the very early stages of development, with Leto and Warner Bros. yet to take the project out to potential writers. However, it's entirely possible that will happen in the coming months, potentially pushing the Suicide Squad spin-off ahead of the sequel to the poorly-received first film.
With yet another Joker film in the works now, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips' Untitled Joker Origin Film, we take a look at all of the rumored films in development to feature the Clown Prince of Crime. All six -- yes, you read that correctly -- six of them.
1. Jared Leto's Joker Solo Film
Let's begin with the latest Joker film. Leto and Warner Bros. are reportedly developing a solo flick for Leto's villain, a surprising move, especially given the fan response to Leto's take on the Clown Prince of Crime. However, it appears the studio is still interested in Leto further developing the character. After all, his appearance in Suicide Squad was essentially a glorified cameo.
Still, details surrounding this film are sparse, so it's far from a done deal. A writer has yet to be brought on board, and although the studio and Leto may begin approaching people soon, a director is not attached, either. Even then, it's entirely possible the film could come before Suicide Squad 2 -- which does have a writer and director -- should the studio opt to push Leto's Joker to the front of its schedule.
2. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Origin Film
The most intriguing project on this list belong to Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips. Not only does the proposed film not exist within the DC Extended Universe, it is meant to kickstart a new banner that'll house numerous DC properties outside of the main DCEU. That banner will put different actors in the roles of iconic DC characters, offering up the potential to introduce new takes on heroes and villains we've already come to know on the big screen.
Filming on the Untitled Joker Origin Film was rumored to begin production in May, however, it appears to have missed that date. Still, the Phoenix-led film appears to be up next for Warner Bros. and DC as all of the pieces are in place... with the notable exception of a release date.
3. The Joker & Harley Quinn Film
Unlike the two solo Joker films, the previously announced Joker and Harley Quinn film doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. When the project was announced back in August 2017, it was also revealed that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (This is Us) are set to write and direct the film as well as serve as producers on the project. Outside of Robbie's comments praising the duo a few months later, details have remained sparse on the project, suggesting it's still early in development.
Interestingly enough, Suicide Squad director David Ayer appeared to tease involvement in the projec. However, it remains unclear at this point as to whether he will be working alongside Ficarra and Requa to tell what Robbie hopes to be an explosive take on Harley and the Joker's relationship.
