The Avengers’ greatest marksman is Clint Barton, though he recently debuted as the leader of a brand new roster of Thunderbolts. He’s most recognizable in his role as Hawkeye, though that isn’t the only costumed identity Barton has used over the years. “Hawkguy” has tried on a few other personas, some of which even had different skills and powers.

He's also been altered by Marvel’s frequently shifting reality. Barton’s numerous roles have all contributed to his legacy which has made him a celebrated member of a few different Marvel teams.

10 Hawkeye Disguised Himself As Father Time To Trick Captain America

Hawkeye disguised as Father Time

One of the most mysterious costumed identities used by Hawkeye first appeared in Captain America #383. Barton donned a new guise as the mysterious Father Time. He planned to lead Captain America on a rooftop chase across the city. His goal was to distract Captain America while the rest of the team set up a surprise party for one of the Avengers' most experienced leaders.

However, Captain America was actually sent on a temporal trip through America’s mythological history by the real Father Time. He met legendary characters like Johnny Appleseed, John Henry and Paul Bunyan. He eventually discovered Hawkeye’s ruse as Father Time after he returned to his own era. Unfortunately, Captain America never discovered if his trip across time was real.

Hawkeye took a leave of absence from the Avengers so that he could lend his knowledge and experience to the Thunderbolts. He helped give the former Masters of Evil the same chance at reformation Captain America gave him when he first joined the Avengers. Hawkeye led his roster of Thunderbolts against Crimson Cowl’s Masters of Evil in Thunderbolts #25.

The Thunderbolts disguised themselves as a few members of the Masters of Evil to infiltrate the large group. Hawkeye took on Constrictor’s identity, though he never got the chance to use his battlesuit's Adamantium coils. Their ruse was quickly discovered when they were sold out by Moonstone and forced to confront the Masters of Evil.

Hawkeye’s successor Kate Bishop assembled the modern roster of the West Coast Avengers. However, Barton joined the young team as well to help guide the heroes while also protecting the reputation of his former team. On a mission to invade an event held by Madame Masque, Hawkeye intended to distract the crowd with a celebrity appearance.

However, the West Coast Avengers didn’t think Hawkeye was a big enough celebrity for the distraction. Bishop forced Barton to use an image inducer to appear as a more famous celebrity. Hawkeye pretended to be the actor-turned-superhero Simon Williams/Wonder Man in West Coast Avengers #8. The disguise worked until the real Wonder Man appeared on live TV.

7 Barton Wore Bullseye’s Suit After The Assassin Used His Ronin Identity

Clint Barton as Bullseye and Bullseye as Ronin

Hawkeye and Bullseye have a long and bitter history. The two had faced each other a couple of times over the years. However, Bullseye proved he was Marvel's deadliest villain during the Dark Reign event. He usurped Hawkeye’s identity and joined Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers. This created a bitter rivalry between the two skilled marksmen.

Bullseye would later steal Barton’s identity again in the Hawkeye: Freefall miniseries. However, this time Bullseye took his Ronin costume and attempted to tarnish the mysterious ninja’s reputation. Barton wore Bullseye’s costume to take out the assassin. He didn’t want anyone to know it was really him when he took out Ronin for good, though he ultimately let Bullseye live.

6 He Disguised Himself As Dreadknight To Observe The Thunderbolts

More than one Avenger managed to use the Thunderbolts’ original ruse against them over the years. Iron Man once used Cobalt Man’s armor to infiltrate the team and stop one of Baron Zemo’s plans. Hawkeye also used this ruse prior to joining the Thunderbolts. Hoping to observe the team in action, he disguised himself as the masked villain Dreadknight.

As Dreadknight, he helped rescue the Thunderbolts after the new Masters of Evil captured the team. He asked to join the team, and they brought him back to their hideout while they discussed his potential recruitment. Hawkeye then revealed he was underneath the mask of Dreadknight. The villain’s identity got him in the door so Hawkeye could deliver his real offer of leadership.

5 Hawkeye Was Transformed Into A Medieval Archer Known As Longbow

A series of attacks on current and former members of the Avengers brought a large roster of the team together after the Heroes Return event. Morgan le Fay manipulated events to gather them so she could transform the world using her magic. The Avengers became the Queen’s Vengeance, and each member was transformed into a medieval soldier in le Fay's personal army.

Hawkeye became a medieval archer known as Longbow. His altered costume kept his original color scheme, though he now resembled the classic Robin Hood character more than ever. Longbow was one of the first Avengers who snapped out of their altered personas. He joined Steve Rogers’ altered costumed identity of Yeoman America and they began recruiting a resistance.

Captain America and The Falcon #179 featured the first appearance of the villainous marksman known as the Golden Archer. However, Golden Archer ripped off his mask to reveal that he was secretly Hawkeye. Barton hoped to inspire Rogers back into action through a battle with a costumed villain. Hawkeye’s ruse worked, and Rogers left retirement in his new Nomad identity. Members of the Squadron Sinister/Squadron Supreme also used the alias over the years.

3 Barton Took On The Goliath Identity When He Began Using Pym Particles

Clint Barton in his Goliath identity

Hawkeye definitely made his name on the Avengers as the team’s resident marksmen. He was also an incredibly skilled fighter, but he still occasionally felt outclassed when dealing with some of the most iconic Avengers villains. When Hank Pym left his Goliath identity and became Yellowjacket, Hawkeye took on the role in his place.

Barton began using the size-changing Pym Particles as the second hero to use the name of Goliath. Janet van Dyne/The Wasp designed the new Goliath costume worn by Barton as a present for Pym before he changed identities. Barton enjoyed his time as the team’s towering strong man, though he eventually returned to his roots as an archer.

2 He Used The Masked Identity Of Ronin After He Returned From The Dead

Hawkeye went out with a bang during the Avengers Disassembled event in an alien attack. This was manipulated by Scarlet Witch despite their unique relationship. He later returned after Scarlet Witch warped reality during the House of M event. Barton wasn’t quite ready to publicly return as Hawkeye after his resurrection. He decided to use a new identity with the New Avengers.

The masked ninja Ronin was first used to hide the identity of Echo. Barton spent a bit more time in the role during the Dark Reign event while Bullseye used his former identity. Barton’s time with Ronin would continue to haunt the hero after a few villains also used the identity. He later briefly returned as Ronin in Hawkeye: Freefall before Bullseye stole the costume.

1 Clint Barton’s Best And Most Respected Identity Is The Avenger Hawkeye

Hawkeye first appeared as a threat to Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #57. However, Barton would soon reform and join the Avengers. He used the skills he learned from his childhood with the circus and years of training with Swordsmaster to excel as a member of the team. Hawkeye’s skills with a bow surpass almost anyone in the Marvel universe.

Hawkeye’s most recognizable costume is his purple chainmail tunic and winged mask. However, he has also worn a stripped-down version of his costume that better reflected his modern role as an occasional S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. While he has trained with all kinds of weapons, his skills with the various trick arrows in Hawkeye's arsenal allow him to stand up to Avengers-level threats alone.
