Dick Grayson has soared higher than ever in his civilian identity as a wealthy humanitarian in Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s ongoing Nightwing series. He’s proven that he can do just as much good as Dick Grayson than he ever did as Nightwing. Of course, Nightwing isn’t the only costumed identity that Dick Grayson has used over the years to help others.

Grayson began his costumed career as the very first Robin alongside Batman in the very first Dynamic Duo. His evolution to Nightwing was only the beginning. He has taken on inspired new roles in the future and fallen to dark depths in other roles. Grayson has also created alternate costumed identities to trick or confuse his enemies as well.

Gotham Underground followed the Batman Family’s attempts to stop a deadly gang war. The Penguin assembled a few supervillain groups that included the New Rogues. The new villains' used weaponry stolen from The Flash’s “Old” Rogues. Freddie Dinardo joined the group as Burn with one of Heat-Wave’s flame guns.

However, Freddie Dinardo was actually an undercover alias used by Dick Grayson. He joined the New Rogues as Burn to infiltrate The Penguin’s gangs. Unfortunately, Vigilante shot him thinking he was a villain and took him out of the fight. A new villain soon took over as Burn, but he died alongside the rest of his teammates when the New Rogues faced the Old Rogues.

9 He Established A New Vigilante Identity As Ric Grayson Before The Joker Turned Him Into Dicky-Boy

The KGBeast was a highly trained Soviet assassin with a grudge against Batman. He decided to strike back at Batman through his closest allies, beginning with Nightwing. KGBeast shot Nightwing in the head and nearly killed him. When Grayson recovered, he had lost most of his memories. He started a new life as Ric Grayson and abandoned his connections to the Batman Family.

However, he couldn’t fight the desire inside him to help others when they needed it. Ric Grayson eventually adopted his own costume in order to help others, though he never officially took on a codename. The Joker further manipulated Ric Grayson into his twisted sidekick Dicky-Boy. Dick Grayson broke free from Joker’s control and regained his memories to become Nightwing again.

8 Dick Grayson Created A New Costumed Identity Known As The Target To Clear His Name

Nightwing tried a new tactic when he became the protector of the city of Blüdhaven. He joined the police department as Dick Grayson in an attempt to help clean it up from the inside. However, his fellow officers turned on him when he attempted to stop them from beating a suspect to death. The group of dirty cops knocked Grayson out and framed him for the murder instead.

Batman arrived in the city and forbade Grayson from using the Nightwing identity. He worried about the exposure of their secret with the added attention. Grayson decided to create a new costumed identity known as The Target. He used the short-lived identity to clear his name as Grayson and put the corrupt cops away. With Grayson cleared, The Target disappeared.

7 Ric Grayson Had Memories Implanted By The Court Of Owls That Transformed Him Into A Talon

The Court of Owls was a secretive organization of Gotham’s wealthy elite who operated as legendary figures. They had developed their own army of highly-trained warriors known as Talons. These Talons were cryogenically frozen to keep their numbers hidden while a single operative carried out the wishes of the Court of Owls.

William Cobb served as the Court’s main Talon for many decades. Cobb was actually Grayson’s great-grandfather, which was a secret that almost ruined everything for Nightwing. When Nightwing lost his memories and became Ric Grayson, Cobb implanted his great-grandson with new memories. Ric Grayson became a Talon, though he rejected the false memories and turned on Cobb.

6 Nightwing Created The Renegade Identity To Go Undercover And Help Train Deathstroke’s Daughter

Deathstroke was a frequent enemy of the Teen Titans when Grayson led the team. That enmity carried on to Nightwing's solo career, though it took a unique turn during the “Renegade” storyline. Grayson accomplished his goals and cleaned up the corrupt police force. He then began working his way into organized crime as an undercover mafia enforcer known as "Crutches" Grayson.

He contacted Deathstroke who then asked him to train his daughter. Rose Wilson/Ravager was an eager student, but she was reckless and had a killer’s edge. Grayson created his new Renegade identity and wore a dark red version of his Nightwing costume while he trained her. His time as Renegade ended when Deathstroke irredeemably caused the destruction of Blüdhaven.

5 Grayson Went Undercover With Spyral As Agent 37 Following His Televised Unmasking And “Death”

The evil multiversal Justice League known as the Crime Syndicate took Nightwing prisoner during the Forever Evil storyline. They unmasked him on live television in order to root out the remaining superheroes as they began their takeover of the world. The New 52's iteration of the Crime Syndicate strapped Grayson to a Murder Machine that would only deactivate if he died.

Lex Luthor temporarily stopped his heart to deactivate the bomb and save the day. Since he was assumed dead, Batman asked him to infiltrate the Spyral spy organization. He became Agent 37 and worked with other agents like Helena Bertinelli/Matron and Tiger/Patron. They worked together to root out the corrupt leader of Spyral and take him down, which ended his run as Agent 37.

4 A Future Version Of Dick Grayson In Kingdom Come Was The First To Use The Name Of Red Robin

There have been a few characters who have used the name and costume of Red Robin. However, the first appearance in the comics of Red Robin happened in the alternate future world of Kingdom Come. The next generation of heroes and villains threatened to destroy the world with unending battles, forcing the old guard of heroes to step in.

Dick Grayson returned to action in his evolved identity of Red Robin. This version of the character never took over as Batman or evolved into Nightwing, and instead aged in his original costumed identity. The Red Robin costume was later worn by Jason Todd after he discovered it in another reality. Tim Drake later took on the role throughout most of the New 52 with a modified costume.

3 He Abandoned His Nightwing Identity To Become Batman Following Bruce Wayne’s “Death”

Bruce Wayne was seemingly killed by Darkseid during the Final Crisis event, which kicked off a Battle for the Cowl. While he was reluctant at first, Dick Grayson ultimately decided to abandon his identity as Nightwing to become the new Dark Knight. He designed a sleeker costume with Alfred that helped him acclimate to his new role.

Grayson also welcomed Damian Wayne onto the Dynamic Duo as Robin officially. Dick and Damian’s time as Batman and Robin featured a few unforgettable moments that earned them a place in the hearts of fans. Grayson remained Batman for a time even after Bruce Wayne returned, though he eventually returned once again to his Nightwing identity.

The very first costumed role Dick Grayson ever technically had was as a performer with his family in the high-flying Grayson’s trapeze act. Unfortunately, his parent’s murder brought that chapter in his life to an end. Bruce Wayne took him in and helped give the grieving young boy a new direction as his partner, Robin.

Grayson created a lasting identity that quite a few other heroes have used over the years. He spent far more years as Robin than the others, aging from the Boy Wonder to the Teen Wonder. He then graduated from the role to become Nightwing. Heroes like Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne have all had to deal with the harsh reality of being a Robin in Grayson's shadow.

Dick Grayson’s tenure as Robin ended when Batman fired him from the role. He had been spending too much time away at college and with the Teen Titans instead of fighting alongside Batman. This inspired Grayson to move out from under Batman’s shadow and start a new life as his own crime fighter. He took the name Nightwing after Superman told him a Kryptonian legend.

Nightwing focused entirely on his role as the leader of the Titans as his new costumed persona continued to evolve. He eventually mended his relationship with Batman, but he didn’t return to Gotham City. Instead, he took on a new challenge as Nightwing in a new city when he decided to become the protector of Blüdhaven.
