The finale of Ms. Marvel on Disney+ teased fans about the upcoming live-action meeting between two heroes who shared the name in The Marvels. While the current Captain Marvel never operated as Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the comic character created a lasting legacy in her first superhero role.

Kamala Khan has since taken on the role of Ms. Marvel. She has made it her own as a respected member of the Champions. However, she followed a few other characters who used the name or costume of Ms. Marvel over the years. Professional wrestlers, supervillains and even Skrulls appeared in the role before Kamala Khan took over as Ms. Marvel.

7 Carol Danvers Was The First Hero To Call Herself Ms. Marvel

She first appeared as a USAF pilot and military security chief. However, it wasn’t long until Carol Danvers met Captain Mar-Vell and inherited her Kree-based abilities. She designed her original Captain Marvel-inspired costume and debuted as the powerful Ms. Marvel. Danvers would operate in this role for years, eventually adopting the more recognizable black bodysuit costume.

Danvers made a name for herself as Ms. Marvel, though she also used a few other names. She abandoned her Ms. Marvel identity to become the most powerful version of Carol Danvers known as Binary. She then tried out the new name of Warbird before ultimately returning to Ms. Marvel. Captain America finally convinced her to follow her destiny as the new Captain Marvel.

6 Agent M17 Donned The Costume In An Attempt To Steal Her Powers

When Carol Danvers first appeared as Ms. Marvel, there was some confusion over the source of her powers. M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. were able to capture Ms. Marvel during her earliest years as a superhero. They hoped to steal her powerful abilities, which M.O.D.O.K. believed came from her retro Mar-Vell-inspired costume.

A woman from A.I.M. known only as Agent M17 volunteered to try out Ms. Marvel’s costume. Unfortunately, she fell flat on her face when she attempted to fly. M.O.D.O.K. then fired a mental blast at Agent M17 to further test the suit, knocking her unconscious. She learned the hard way that the costume had no extra abilities, and Danvers reclaimed her role as Ms. Marvel.

5 Sharon Ventura Was A Powered Wrestler Who Fought As Ms. Marvel

Ben Grimm/The Thing spent some time fighting with the superpowered Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation. A stuntwoman named Sharon Ventura jumped at the chance to join a wrestling group known as the Grapplers. She gained super-strength and took on the abandoned identity of Ms. Marvel in the UCWF ring.

The Grapplers would ultimately turn on the new Ms. Marvel. She would become a powerful ally of The Thing and Captain America after she left the UCWF. She even became one of the best Fantastic Four substitute members. Ventura mutated into a new She-Thing form after being exposed to cosmic rays in space which ended her brief run as Ms. Marvel.

4 Moonstone Usurped The Ms. Marvel Identity As A Dark Avenger

Norman Osborn used Ms. Marvel’s identity for his own benefit after he became the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the Dark Reign event. He created his own team of Dark Avengers that were secretly supervillains disguised as established heroes. Osborn asked a former teammate and powerful member of the Thunderbolts named Moonstone to become his Ms. Marvel.

Dr. Karla Sofen was a criminal psychologist who manipulated a villain into giving up his source of power. Moonstone’s abilities allowed her to successfully masquerade as Ms. Marvel, which led to a lasting rivalry with her predecessor, Carol Danvers. She wore a retro version of Ms. Marvel’s costume instead of the more recognized black bodysuit still worn by Danvers at the time.

3 Superia Was The Second Dark Avenger To Pose As Ms. Marvel

Dr. Diedre Wentworth altered her own genetics to give herself incredible abilities as Superia. She was the powerful founder of the supervillain group known as the Femizons. Superia hoped to kick off a new world order ruled by women. Superia also managed to take control of organizations like A.I.M. and H.A.M.M.E.R. in her desire to bring about the future world of the Femizons.

Superia was leading H.A.M.M.E.R. when Norman Osborn broke out and decided to form a second roster of Dark Avengers. Osborn invited her to join the team as his new Ms. Marvel, and she accepted. Superia donned the same Ms. Marvel costume worn by Moonstone. Her run as Ms. Marvel ended when Skarr betrayed the Dark Avengers.

2 Carol Danvers Gave Ultragirl The Ms. Marvel Costume For Her Graduation

Suzy Sherman was the young hero known as Ultragirl who had a mysterious past. She eventually learned that she was actually a half-Kree mutant named Tsu-Zana with incredible strength, speed and the ability to fly. A prophecy claimed she was the Ultimate Nullifier in the ongoing war against the Kree and the Skrull.

Ultragirl became one of the most powerful recruits of the fifty-state Initiative. She dealt with a number of challenges during her training, but she eventually graduated. At her graduation, Carol Danvers gave Ultragirl her original Ms. Marvel costume as a present. Ultragirl wore it briefly as a new Ms. Marvel before she returned to her original role.

1 Skrulls Impersonated Versions Of Ms. Marvel During Secret Invasion

There were a couple of Skrulls who assumed the likeness of Carol Danvers' Ms. Marvel during the Secret Invasion event. A Skrull adopted her appearance in order to confuse Iron Man’s Lightning Storm agents. That Skrull was on Earth to hunt down a hidden Kree, though she ultimately killed herself while imprisoned.

Another version appeared in the Savage Land aboard a crashed Skrull ship. She joined a number of other retro-looking Marvel characters, all of whom believed they were the real deal. The Skrull impersonating Ms. Marvel was wearing Carol Danvers’ original costume. The heroes defeated the invaders after identifying the retro Marvel characters as Skrulls.
