When it hits theaters in late 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will finally see Miles Morales take on the role of Spider-Man on the big screen. Previously, Morales had been seen in limited animation and video games, but this film will finally bring him to a wider audience. That's not all the film will do though; thanks to the introduction of the aforementioned "Spider-Verse," the film will also introduce a large number of Spider-Men from across the multiverse. The final trailer has been released and various casting announcements have hit the Internet, but there are still some characters we aren't certain will make a showing.
Thanks to those casting announcements and some other leaked information, there are quite a few characters confirmed to make an appearance. Even with those announcements, there are also some characters we either expect to make a showing or there have been substantial rumors floating around suggesting they will. This is the Spider-Verse after all, which means that pretty much any and every version of our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man could make a showing. That list would also include some of those Spider-Man enemies you expect in a film like this as well as several you might not expect. We dug through the rumors and reports to come up with this list of the 19 confirmed characters and (over!) five who are rumored to make a showing.
24 CONFIRMED: MILES MORALES
The most obvious confirmed character is, of course, Miles Morales. This version of Spider-Man first appeared in the pages of Ultimate Fallout #4 back in 2011, but quickly rose in popularity as he crossed over into the main Marvel Universe. Miles differs in many ways from Peter Parker in that his family is still alive and he is of African and Puerto Rican descent.
This movie is going to center on Miles, but he won't be the only Spider-Man swinging about. Shameik Moore was cast to take on the role and like Morales, he started out in 2011 with a role on House of Payne. Since then, he has made several appearances in television series and played a significant role in the film Dope.
23 CONFIRMED: GWEN STACY
Another character seen in the previews is Spider-Gwen, aka the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 wherein Gwen was bitten by the spider that bit Peter Parker in the standard, Earth-616 version of Marvel. She first debuted in Edge of the Spider-Verse #2 in 2014 and has since become a popular character in the ever-expanding Spider-Verse of Marvel Comics.
This version of Gwen Stacy has the same superpowers as Spider-Man/Miles Morales from the other universes, but has a much more free-spirited nature than her counterparts. For the film, she will be voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, an actress and singer best known for her roles in True Grit (2010), Pitch Perfect 2 and the upcoming Bumblebee film. She will also voice Gwanda, the version of Gwen Stacy from Miles' universe.
22 RUMORED: MORLUN
While there have been no confirmations related to his appearance, one of the more obvious possibilities of villains for the film is Morlun. In the comics, the Spider-Verse was introduced thanks to a need for the various Spider-Men and Spider-Women from around the multiverse needing to unite to defeat Morlun and the Inheritors. It stands to reason a film based on those comics might just follow suit and put Morlun up as the "big bad" for the film.
Fortunately, the trailers haven't hinted one way or another who might be the bad guy all these Spider-People need to fight, but Morlun seems like a strong possibility. There is no indication anyone has been cast to play him online, but that is probably due to the production keeping that sort of information under wraps before the film debuts.
21 CONFIRMED: AARON DAVIS
Aaron Davis, aka the Prowler, has been seen briefly in the previews so we know he will be making a showing in the film. The Prowler in the Ultimate Universe is Miles Morales' uncle and the brother of Jefferson Davis. He and his backstory differ somewhat from that of Hobart "Hobie" Brown from Earth-616, but it seems we won't be seeing that version of the Prowler in this film.
Davis will be voiced by Mahershala Ali who is probably best known for his roles on House of Cards, Predators, The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons, and as Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes in Netflix's Marvel's Luke Cage. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work on Moonlight, which gave him the honor of being the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
20 CONFIRMED: PETER B. PARKER
Miles Morales is clearly THE Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe presented in the film, but he is following in the footsteps of another Spider-Man from his world. That being said, it seems that another, more familiar version of the web-slinger will arrive on the scene to help guide Miles as he takes on the role of the Spectacular Spider-Man. This version, Peter B. Parker, is the Spider-Man most fans are familiar with from the comics and films.
Jake Johnson, best known for playing Nick Miller on New Girl and other roles in Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed has been cast in the role of Peter B. Parker in the film. This version of the character has been compared to Tobey Maguire's performance from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, but his true nature will only be revealed when the film releases.
19 CONFIRMED: WILSON FISK
Everybody's favorite Marvel bad guy may appear these days to be more of a Daredevil villain than Spider-Man's, but he debuted back in Amazing Spider-Man #50 all the way back in 1967 and remained a thorn in the web-slinger's side for pretty much his entire career. He slid over into Daredevil's world a while later, but for the most part, Kingpin is and always will be a villain to Spider-Man.
His appearance has been confirmed in the film thanks to the casting of none other than Liev Schreiber in the role. Comic fans may recall Schreiber as the man behind Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but these days he has been involved in his Showtime series, Ray Donovan.
18 CONFIRMED: JEFFERSON DAVIS
The biggest difference between Miles and Peter isn't the color of their skin, it's the strange fact that Miles' folks are still around. The superheroes created back in the '60s were pretty much all orphans, but not so for Miles Morales, which makes him a bit different from the other web-slingers in the Spider-Verse. His father, Jefferson Davis, plays a big role in his life and his development into Spider-Man.
Davis will be appearing in the film and has already been seen in the trailers as the police officer pop of Miles. He will be voiced by Brian Tyree Henry, best known for his work on the television series Atlanta where he plays Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles as well as voice work on Bojack Horseman and his significant work in theater productions including a role in The Book of Mormon.
17 CONFIRMED: RIO MORALES
No, Miles doesn't come from a tragic backstory where his father was force to raise him after his mom was killed in a freak accident that also gave him his powers. Miles' mother, Rio Morales, is alive and well in his world so don't be surprised when she pops up in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at one point or another.
The film will definitely have her make an appearance thanks to the casting announcement that she will be played by Luna Lauren Velez. She is best known for her work on various television series including Dexter, New York Undercover, Oz, and Ugly Betty. This appears to be Velez's first work as a voice actor, but seeing her CV is so full of iconic roles, it's likely she will knock this one out of the park.
16 RUMORED: SPIDER-PUNK
Another fan-favorite version of Spider-Man who is likely, but not confirmed to make an appearance in the film is Spider-Punk. This version of the character comes from an alternate world where President Norman Osborn rules the United States of America through a fascist regime subjugated by his Thunderbolt Department.
After picking up some spider-based superpowers, Hobart Brown decided to suit up as Spider-Man and take on the evil Osborn in a more 'counter-culture' stance than other versions. Spider-Punk quickly became a popular version of the character. In a release for the comic book tie in, Spider-Man: Enter the Spider-Verse #1, Spider-Punk is mentioned by name as a version who will be making an appearance, which suggests he will show up in the film as well.
15 CONFIRMED: MAY PARKER
You can't have a Spider-Man movie without throwing May Parker into the mix. Peter's Aunt May is one of the biggest influences into his becoming and remaining Spider-Man and seeing as Peter is going to be in the movie, it stands to reason she would have to show up at one point or another as well. Granted, this is Miles' story, but Peter Parker doesn't go anywhere without his Aunt May!
Casting announcements have confirmed that May will be played by none other than veteran actress Lily Tomlin. Tomlin's career spans decades and includes work in films including 9 to 5, All of Me, Big Business, and I Heart Huckabees in addition to many more. This isn't her first foray into voice acting as she has worked on films including An Apology to Elephants and the English translation of Ponyo.
14 CONFIRMED: SPIDER-HAM
For anyone watching the previews who thought the diminutive pig-like Spider-Man was a joke, it both is and it isn't. Peter Porker, otherwise known as Spider-Ham, was first created by Tom DeFalco and Mark Armstrong for Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 in 1983. He is a farcical version of Spider-Man to be sure, but he is also a member of the Spider-People within the Spider-Verse.
Comedian John Mulaney has been cast in the role of Spider-Ham who appears to play a significant role in the film. Mulaney's previous work includes writing for Saturday Night Live, performing stand-up with a number of specials released, and he had a short-lived sitcom on Fox called Mulaney.
13 CONFIRMED: PENI PARKER
Not all versions of Spider-Man across the Spider-Verse are given powers in exactly the same way. The Earth-14512 version is a Japanese-American middle school student named Peni Parker who was adopted by Ben and May Parker after her parents died. Instead of becoming Spider-Woman or another similar version, she maintains a psychic link to a radioactive spider within a mechanized suit called SP//dr.
Peni Parker was seen briefly in the trailers for the film so there isn't any doubt she will play a role. Kimiko Glenn has been cast to play her and she is probably best known for her work playing Brook Soso on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, but has also performed on Broadway as Dawn Pinket in Waitress and lent her voice to Ezor in Voltron: Legendary Defender.
12 RUMORED: SILK
Silk is another relatively new entry into the Spider-Verse as she was recently introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 2014. Silk, otherwise known as Cindy Moon, is a Korean American who picked up her powers right after Peter Parker after being bitten by the same spider that gave him his powers. Her powers developed differently than his and she remained unable to control them for years.
Like many of the others on this list, Silk is an incredibly popular version of the wall-crawler, though she is her own superhero and not technically a version of Spider-Man. There are pretty good odds she will make an appearance in the film, but no casting information has leaked to prove this rumor anything other than the hopeful desires of eager fans.
11 CONFIRMED: SPIDER-MAN NOIR
Though he was only briefly shown in the trailers, it is confirmed that Spider-Man Noir will be making an appearance in the film and may play somewhat of a mentoring role to the other Spider-People. In his world, he is simply called Spider-Man, but thanks to the 1933-era Depression-esque stylized representation of his books, Spider-Man Noir has become a very different version of the character. He has the same sort of powers, but also wields a handgun on occasion and acts like a detective/private eye from the era.
Spider-Man Noir will be voiced by Nicolas Cage, a longtime fan of comics who once tried to play Superman, but made his mark on the Marvel Universe by playing Johnny Blaze in two Ghost Rider films prior to the launching of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
10 CONFIRMED: MIGUEL O'HARA
Another version of Spider-Man who became popular shortly after he was released was Miguel O'Hara, otherwise known as Spider-Man 2099. This version of the character derived his powers differently from the traditional Spider-Man and was more of a reimagining of the web-slinger for a future generation on the cusp of the 22nd century. Spider-Man 2099 and the other 2099 books ran for a short while, but the one character who remains within the Marvel Universe in any real capacity is O'Hara.
It has been confirmed that he will not play a role in the film, but will be in a post-credits scene as a cameo. He will be voiced by Oscar Isaac who previously portrayed Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse as well as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
9 CONFIRMED: DOCTOR OCTOPUS
Like the Kingpin, you really can't have a Spider-Man movie without Doctor Otto Octavius, aka Doc Oc! This longtime villain in the Spider-Man Universe started out as something of a puny villain, but over the years, he became one of Peter Parker's biggest foes. He has been brilliantly portrayed in film by Alfred Molina in Spider-Man II and was also the "big bad" in the Spider-Man PS4 game released in 2018.
Doc Oc will be voiced in the film by Kathryn Hahn who is best known for her work in comedic films including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Step Brothers, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It isn't clear if Doc Oc will be a female character or male, but either way, Hahn stands to make for a memorable performance.
8 CONFIRMED: GANKE LEE
Ganke Lee is Miles Morales' best friend from school and one of the people who knows of his alter ego as Spider-Man. Fans confused the role of Ned Leeds from Spider-Man: Homecoming as Lee, but the two characters are distinct from one another even if they are drastically similar. Throughout the books, Lee works behind the scenes to help Miles protect his secret while making sure he is covered for his various activities, which make him an incredibly important person in Miles' life.
In the trailer, there was a scene six of the Spider-People were hiding in a boy's bedroom in the ceiling. That young man appears to be none other than Ganke Lee. This isn't 100% confirmed and a voice actor for this character is not currently known, but the general consensus online is that this person is Lee.
7 RUMORED: FILM SPIDER-MEN
This is entirely rumor at this point, but there is a discussion online revolving around the proposition that the three Spider-Men as seen in film will make an appearance in the movie. This would possibly include voice work and depictions of the Spider-Men from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy, Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man movies, and Tom Holland's Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
As we mentioned, this is entirely speculation and while it would certainly be fun to hear and see these actors recreate their roles in animated form, there is nothing other than rumor suggesting it might happen. There is precedence for this sort of thing in film, but at this point, it may just be a hopeful desire of more eager fans wanting to see their favorite web-slinger animated on the big screen.
6 CONFIRMED: MARY JANE WATSON
Gwen Stacey may have been Peter Parker's original love, but Mary Jane Watson has been his significant other on and off for decades. She recently made a significant appearance in the Spider-Man PS4 game and has been his wife and a major player in his life, which is why it should come as no surprise to learn she has a role in the movie.
The role of MJ has been taken by Zoë Isabella Kravitz. She made her acting debut back in 2007's No Reservations and has since gone on to star in films including Mad Max: Fury Road, The Lego Batman Movie, and Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them as well as that film's sequel. This is her second foray into voice-over work having played Selina Kyle in The Batman Lego Movie.
5 CONFIRMED: VANESSA FISK
For anyone who is up to date on Netflix's Daredevil series, it's very clear that Vanessa plays an important role in the Kingpin's life. In the comics, she is his ruthless wife and could certainly stand as comparable to her criminal husband. She has been portrayed as both a victim of her husband's criminal enterprises and complicit in them, but the fact remains that she is a major part in his life and will be seen on the screen if he is anywhere nearby.
She has been confirmed to appear in the movie thanks to a casting announcement confirming she will be voiced by Lake Bell. Bell is best known for her work on Boston Legal and numerous films, but comic fans know her as the future star of Harley Quinn as Dr. Pamela Isley, aka Poison Ivy.
