DC Comics' big summer crossover storyline Event Leviathan is officially underway with a mysterious villain attacking the various intelligence agencies throughout the DC Universe before setting their sights on its superhero community.
While spinning out of the pages of Action Comics, writer Brian Michael Bendis assures readers that the event will soon impact the entire DCU. Additionally, Bendis assures the event's titular villain is a previously established character, while maintaining the secret of their identity.
"It starts as a Superman story, becomes a DC story, and may end up becoming another kind of story once we find out who Leviathan is," Bendis told Polygon. "Which we will find out in the pages of Event Leviathan. It is an existing DC character. That is the only hint I’m giving, because that’s fair."
Linked to Talia al Ghul before nearly killing her, Leviathan's identity is still shrouded in secrecy. Bendis consoles readers with the fact that even the DCU's greatest detectives have been unable to discover who is behind the attacks so far.
"Mysteries in comics are always tough because they’re monthly and everyone’s online talking and talking about them," he said. "I always try to be fair with the clues a little bit. And I think it fair that if you’re saying it’s a mystery, that it be a mystery you can solve, so yes, it is a mystery that people can solve."
"If Batman hasn’t solved it yet, don’t beat yourself up about not solving it before Batman," Bendis continued. "He’s really good at this. If Batman hasn’t solved it yet, don’t worry about it. Lois Lane hasn’t figured it out yet. Don’t worry. She’s smarter than you, I don’t know you, but I’m telling you, Lois Lane is smarter than you."
Event Leviathan #2 is written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Alex Maleev. It is scheduled to go on sale July 10 from DC Comics.
