It seems that every time an interview with the cast and crew of Captain America: The Winter Soldier pings on our radar, two words consistently come up: "'70s thriller." That's the tone directors Joe and Anthony Russo are striving for, based on comments made by the brothers and virtually everyone else involved with the project — Chris Evans included.

"The brothers said right from the start that we were really doing a '70s thriller," Evans told Empire. "And I think just Cap's abilities mesh well with that kind of genre. I mean, his powers are very meat and potatoes. Faster. Stronger. Punch. Kick. That works with those types of movies. It would be more difficult to put, say, Hulk in that kind of context."

The 1970s serve as a type of inspiration, but the film is even more about the dichotomy between Steve Rogers' roots 1940s and his reawakening in the present day. Evans said the Captain America sequel sees Steve confronting "the modern world" and "trying to find how he fits."

"To be a good man is difficult," he said. "To be the best man you can be is even harder. Even though he doesn't choose to wear his baggage on his sleeve, I think that's his skill set. He doesn't moan. There is a depth to him. There are always new things to find."

Opening April 4, Captain America: The Winter Soldier also stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Haley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Max Hernandez, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre and Robert Redford.
